Direct Method

The Direct Method is an approach to teaching languages that aims to teach a second language in the same way a first language is acquired, focusing on speaking and listening in the target language only. Key characteristics include conducting all classroom instruction in the target language, emphasizing correct pronunciation and grammar, and teaching everyday vocabulary and sentences. The Direct Method is based on the assumption that a new language can be learned in the same way as a first language through direct experience using the target language exclusively.

DIDACTICS I

DIRECT METHOD

PIA BARRETO
NATHALIE JUAYEK

DEFINITION

Direct Method is to teach the learner in the same way as

when a first language is learnt.
All teaching is done in the target language, grammar is
taught inductively and there is a focus on speaking and
listening.
Classroom instructions are
conducted in the target language.

Correct pronunciation and grammar

are emphasized.

CHARACTERISTICS
Both speaking and listening
comprehension are taught.

Only everyday vocabulary and

sentences are taught.
AIMS
The DM of teaching languages aims to build a
direct way into the world of the target language
making a relation between experience and
language, word and idea, thought and
expression, rule and performance.
WHAT IS BASED IT ON?

This method is based on the assumption that the learner

should experience the new language in the same way
he/she experienced his/her mother tongue.
CONTEXT AND
BACKGROUND

The Direct Method was developed as a response

to the Grammar Translation method.

It was developed by Maximilian Berlitz toward the

end of the 19th century.
THEORY OF LANGUAGE

The Direct Method is considered as a tool for

communication and it is assumed that a learner
could make a direct association between L2 and
its meaning without the need to translate into L1.

Teacher's role

The teacher’s role is to help the student to

develop the skill of language learning.

The teacher is seen as a model and coach.

TECHNIQUES

Question and answer exercise.

Dictation.

Student self-correction.

Conversation practice.

Paragraph writing.

DISADVANTAGES
What this method seeks is that the students
speak only in L2, however, even if they do, they
could be thinking in L1 and not in L2.

Another disadvantage in the Direct Method is its

assumption that a second language can be
learnt in exactly the same way as a first, when in
fact the conditions under which a second
language is learnt are very different.
THE DIRECT
METHOD
TODAY
The teacher continues to be viewed as a
coach.

The persistence of teaching a language

solely through it, without using the
mother tongue or L1, continues.

The emphasis on listening and speaking.

The use of target language in class.
