Introduction to journalism
Journalism serves as the watchdog and whistle-blower for society. It combines everything from “hard
news” to politics, public affairs, softer news (human interest and celebrity stories). In other words,
journalism isalso a source of entertainment. And most importantly, modern journalismalso gives
lifestyle messages, medical updates, education, and more.
Before anything can be published as newsprint or read from a telecast, it must go through the hands of
an individual –the journalist. Journalistic writing is very different from other forms of writing; this is
why a journalist must have gone through a formal education system for their profession. Several steps
of journalism begin with gathering news from different sources and end with sharing the same
through various channels.
The majority of people across the globe rely on journalism for information. This is because it acts as
the eyes and ears of an average person. Without journalism, the world would be without a
mouthpiece forthe governed. Governments or individuals would embezzle funds, and noone would
know.
One thing to note is that journalism has been on a rampant expansion over the past few decades. The
biggest question, however, remains about what type of people is journalists. Research shows that the
majority of journalists today are white makes, and it has been so sincethe 1970s.
Even though many media outlets claim to focus on diversity, there is stilla huge gap. Again, a
journalist must have a specific set of skills, first an education in journalism, and then the ability to
write excellent, or otherwise a nose for news. Hence, a journalism student must understand what the
course is all about.
Print journalism is the oldest form of the industry. It was already around decades before motion
pictures were invented. Besides, journalism is all aboutwriting interesting stories that can be read by
or for the audience. Hence, is it vital for a beginning journalist to understand the various types of
print. The three main divisions are;
- NEWSPAPERS.
Like the international weekly, Sunday edition, national, and many others.
- MAGAZINES.
These are separated to form another broad category of print media. They cater for different ages and
subjects ranging from business, the arts, teen fashions, and many others. Magazines are usually
printed on glossy paper with lots of colors and illustrations. They are designed for entertainment
reading, except those intended to deliver hard-hitting news. Besides, they come after a certain period
and offer educational information.
- BOOKS.
Book date back to the earliest days. They are the largest form of print media and cover different
topics on a more extensive scale. Books offer a better viewof the beginnings of journalism and
writing before the invention of the printing press.
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS MAKE A JOURNALIST?
First, journalists are considered a special breed of people. They have a set of skills that no other
individual do, perhaps a common fascination shared by all is the printed word. All journalists
love playing with wordsfor their edification as well as professional purpose.
Journalists are professional and very cautious and conscious. They always tend to check their
sources, wording, quotes, and even spelling. They are required to adhere to journalistic
standards and ethics. They make mistakes, but they always know how to come back. They
always abide by deadlines, datelines, and by-lines and they give credit to their sources.
Journalists report without fear or bias on the developing stories. This is perhaps the reason
becoming a journalist may be hard than many think.
Industry profile
Graphic design can be defined as the art and profession of selecting and arranging visual elements,
such as types, images, symbols, and colors, to convey a message to a recipient. Sometimes graphic
design is called visual communications, a term that emphasizes its function of giving form, e.g. the
design of a book, advertisement, logo or web site, to information. An importantpart of the designer’s
task is to combine visual and verbal elements into an ordered and effective whole.
A product package, for example, might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure
design elements such as shapes and color which unifythe piece. Composition is one of the most
important features of graphic design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse
elements.
What Are the Elements of Design?
The elements of design are the fundamental aspects of any visual design which include shape, color,
space, form, line, value, and texture. Graphic designers use the elements of design to create an image
that can convey acertain mood, draw the eye in a certain direction, or evoke a number of feelings.
While the elements of design form the basics of any image, designers also lean on the principles of
design, which are a set of practices of working withthe elements of design that make a composition
look pleasing to the eye.
There are a variety of graphic design elements to consider when creating any visual work of art,
whether it be for interior design, a logo, an advertisement, orweb design. The basic elements of
design are:
1. Color: Color helps establish a mood for your composition. When light wavesstrike an object and
reflect back to the optic nerve in a human’s eyes, the sensation they perceive is called color.
2. Line: Line refers to the way that two points in space are connected. Whetherthey’re horizontal
lines, diagonal lines, or vertical lines, lines can help direct the eye toward a certain point in your
composition. You can also create texture by incorporating different types of lines such as curved
or patterned lines instead of just straight lines.
3. Value: In design, value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. The values of a color are
often visualized in a gradient, which displays a series ofvariations on one hue, arranged from the
lightest to the darkest. Artists can use the various values of color to create the illusion of mass and
volume in their work.
4. Space: Making proper use of space can help others view your design as youintended. White space
or negative space is the space between or around the focal point of an image. Positive space is the
space that your subject matter takes up in your composition. The spacing of your design is
important because a layout that’s too crowded can overwhelm the viewer’s eye.
5. Shape: In its most basic form, a shape is a two-dimensional area that is surrounded by an outline.
Graphic artists can use other elements including line, color, value, and shadow to give a shape the
appearance of a three- dimensional shape. There are three types of shapes: organic shapes which
occur naturally in the world, geometric shapes which are angular and mathematically consistent, and
abstract shapes that represent things in naturebut aren’t perfectly representative.
6. Form: Form pertains to the way that a shape or physical configuration occupiesspace. Instead of
creating form through three-dimensional physical shape, designers create the appearance of form on a
flat surface by using light, shadow, and the appearance of an object’s contours, negative space, and
the surrounding objects around the subject matter.
7. Texture: Texture is one of the elements of design that is used to represent howan object appears or
feels. Tactile texture is a physical sense of touch, whether it’s rough, smooth, or ribbed. Visual texture,
on the other hand, refers to the imagined feel of the illustrated texture, which can create more visual
interest and a heightened sensory experience.
History of Graphic designing
The evolution of graphic design as a practice and profession has been closely bound to technological
innovations, societal needs and the visual imagination of its practitioners. Graphic design has been
practiced in various forms throughout history. Strong examples of graphic design date back to
manuscripts in ancient China, Egypt and Greece. As printing and book production developed in the 15th
century, advances in graphic design developed alongside it over subsequent centuries, with compositors
or typesetters often designing pages in addition to setting the type.
In the late 19th century graphic design emerged as a distinct profession in the West, in part because of the
job specialization process that occurred there, and inpart because of the new technologies and commercial
possibilities brought about by the Industrial Revolution. New production methods led to the separation of
the design of a communication medium (e.g. a poster) from its actual production.
Increasingly, over the course of the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, advertising agencies,
book publishers and magazines hired art directors who organized all visual elements of the
communication and brought them into a harmonious whole, creating an expression appropriate to the
content. In 1922 typographer William A. Dwiggings coined the term ‘graphic design’ to identifythis
emerging field.
William Addison Dwiggins pioneered modern graphic design. He was a typeface designer in the
1920’s. His most famous fonts include: Caravan Metro, Electra, Caledonia, Eldorado, and Falcon.
Dwiggins continued creating and innovating in the design community until his death in 1956. Less than
a decade after Dwiggins’death, Douglas Engel Bart invented the mouse. This invention of a precision
pointing device paved the way for what would be the greatest innovation in design tools of this
generation: the Macintosh. Apple presented the Macintosh in 1984. This was the first computer with a
user friendly interface. Shortly after the invention of the 1984 Macintosh graphics applications such as
Photoshop and Illustrator were introduced to the world. Since the invention of these applications,
designers have been able to create amazing works of art across a variety of mediums.

OUTCOME OF THE TRAINING
This summer training helped me to grow as a professional and gave a site into the real world of
Graphic designing. The exposure through this training gave me the confidence of facing people in
the real world. It educated me about many facts related to graphic designing which were very
different from what I learned in theory.
CONCLUSION
At the end of this project I would like to conclude that there is a lot of difference between theory
& practical study of graphic designing.
I learnt how the department of graphic design works. In short it had been a whole new
experience working there, which broadened my point of view regarding the working of
designing organization.
