EPISODE 4
CREATING AN APPROPRIATE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

SPARK Your Interest

This learning episode provides an opportunity to examine how classroom are structured or
designed to allow everyone’s maximum participation for effective learning. You should be able to examine
how classroom management practices affect learning. This Episode enhances the application of the
theories learned in the following professional as Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching and The Child and
Adolescent Learners and Learning Principles.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcome

At the end of this activity, the student should have:

 Planned on how to manage time, space, and resources; and
 Provided a learning environment appropriate to the learners and conducive to learning.

REVISIT the Learning Essentials

The classroom climate that is conducive for learning is one that is non-threatening yet business-like.
It is a classroom where, when creating audio-visual presentations, the following are observed:
 Specific classroom rules and procedures are clear.
 Classroom rules and procedures are discussed within the first few days of the school.
 Students are involved in the design of rules and procedures.
 Techniques to acknowledge and reinforce acceptable behaviour are employed.
 Clear limits for unacceptable behaviour are established and negative consequences for such are
communicated.
 Classroom process are democratic

ACTIVITY 4.1
Ask permission to your former School principal or teacher to have a quick visit to your former school and
conduct interview with your former teacher. Make sure that you follow safety protocols.
If given the chance to that your request will be granted:
TOOLS During the Observation

ANALYZE
Analyse and answer these questions on observed classroom management practices. Write your notes
below; and then organize your data in the Table as follows.
1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books, students’
belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will it make a difference if these areas specific
purposes are not present?
Ans: There are two cabinets in the classroom, one in front at the right side of the teacher’s table and another
one at the back, left side of the room. These cabinets are storage of teaching aids for the teacher and the
other one is for the students’ books and belongings. If these areas are not present in the classroom, there is a
big possibility that the room will be messy, books will scatter or get damaged, and belongings will be lost.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these rules reinforce positive
behaviour?
Ans:
 Listen to the teacher
 Sit nicely in your chair
 Raise your hand to talk
 Be kind to your classmates
 Return the things to their proper places
 Be active in the classroom
 Do your best work
The establishment of classroom rules reflects the success of the students' learning. Through these rules, students
become accountable for their actions, which leads to a clear understanding of their task.

3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? Ask the resource teacher if available to
describe the process. What’s the effect of students’ participation in rule-making on students’ behaviour?
Ans: Yes, they did participate in making the classroom rules. The teacher gave them examples of rules and asks
his students for any additional or suggestions and if none, it is approved by everyone. Students who participate in
the rule-making process are more likely to become disciplined and responsible rule-followers.

4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (Prayer, attendance, assignment of
monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
Ans:
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Putting students’ cellphones in the box
 Checking of Attendance
 Lesson Proper
 Questions
 Reading hand-outs
 Games
 Short quiz
 Closing Prayer

5. Is there a setting arrangement? What is the basis of these arrangement? Does it help managing the
class?
Ans: Female students are sitting at the left side of the class while the males are at the right side. But there are
some males sit at the back of the girls just to occupy the space. Seating arrangement does help in managing the
class, the teacher can monitor the students’ behaviors and attentions. The way students are seated can affect how
they connect with one another and with their teachers, which can affect how engaged, motivated, and focused
they are.

6. How the Resource Teacher manage the noise level in the classroom?
Ans: Many students participate actively in the discussion, and everyone wants to express their answers and
opinions. The teacher tells everyone to reduce their noises, and he does it so calmly. He warns them that they
are interrupting other classes with their loud noises.

7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off-task, what does the Resource Teacher do? Describe the
behaviour strategies used.
Ans: There are still students who does not follow instructions, but the teacher handles it well. He will remind those
students again and make sure that next time, they will follow all the instructions because if not, their outputs will
not be accepted.

8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviours? ( behavior strategies)
Ans: These are the resource teacher’s strategies:
 Impose classroom rules
 Teacher shows an approachable character
 Make the class discussion engaging and fun
 Address problems in a friendly manner. Let the student speak their sides and solves the problem
privately, he doesn’t scold the students in front of the class.
 Motivate the students
 Incorporate activities that promotes collaboration

REFLECT
Reflection as a future teacher.
1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?
Ans: As a future teacher, enforcing a positive discipline to my students is important because
Positive discipline encourages students to learn and succeed in school by encouraging them
through teaching rather than punishment. It improves motivation and character development in
students, allows for the establishment of good examples, and favorably influences academic
performance.

ANALYZE
1. How did the classrooms organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior?
Ans: Classroom routines can boost student confidence and comfort levels since students know what is expected of
them in various settings. When your classroom is organized well, your students are aware of their duties and what
you expect of them. Additionally, it helps students better organize their study by providing them with a defined daily
schedule for your class.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and routines? What
theories and principles should you have in mind?
Ans: In designing the classroom organizations and routines, teacher must have in mind the things that will help the
students be more organized and discipline. He/she can talk to his/her fellow teachers, focus on respect, classroom
management, choose logical consequences, and work within district guidelines.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating students? Why
were they effective?
Ans: Teachers need to be aware of how students' mental health affects behavior management. Rewarding good
behavior, including finishing homework, paying attention in class, and being considerate of others, is another way
teachers can control their students' behavior. The establishment of classroom behavior rules is a crucial method for
managing student behavior. The most effective approach to accomplish this is to include students in the rule-setting
process without giving them power over it, as this makes it clear that the instructor is in charge.

REFLECT
Reflect on the following and write your insights.
1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade level do you see yourself? What routines
and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?
Ans: I foresee instructing junior high students in my English class in the near future. The most important part of my
class will begin with a prayer, then I will check for absences, ask how my students are doing, provide
encouragement, lead a proper discussion, ask questions, give them activities like games or quizzes to test their
knowledge and make the day fun, and conclude with a prayer.
2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why should you choose these rules?
Ans:
 Arrive on time for class
 Listen to the teacher
 Raise your hand to speak
 Respect everyone
 Say Please & Thank you
 No using of phones while the teacher is discussing
 Do your best
I chose these rules for the classroom to improve student learning by showing the students how to behave in a proper
and safe manner in the classroom.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

Ans: Yes, students must be involved in the creation of classroom rules so that they will understand their rights and
responsibilities. Establishing open communication can be facilitated by involving your students in the development of
the classroom rules. By having more influence over their learning environment, students may feel more empowered
and inclined to abide by the rules. They will be aware that the regulations are just, rational, and advantageous to
everyone.

Show Your Learning Artifacts

Paste pieces of evidence of classroom rules that work in class. You may put pictures of the physical space and
learning stations which contribute to the effective implementation of classroom management.
