Problem 1.
A symmetrical 440V, the 3-phase system supplies a star-connected
load with the following branch impedances: 𝑍𝑅 = 100Ω,
𝑍𝑌 = 𝑗5Ω and 𝑍𝐵 = −𝑗5Ω. Calculate the voltage drop across each branch
and the potential of the neutral point to earth. The phase sequence is
RYB. Draw the vector diagram.

Problem 2.
A 3-phase, balanced Y-connected load takes 60kVA at 0.8 power factor
(lagging) from a 415V, 3-phase, 50Hz, AC Supply. It is connected in
parallel with a balanced Δ-connected load with the per phase
impedance of 𝑍∆ = (8 − 𝑗6) Ω. Find
a) The total apparent power, real power, line current magnitude and
power factor of combined load.
b) The impedance per phase in the Y- connected load and the phase
current vector 𝐼𝑎𝑛 . Take the phase voltage vector 𝑉𝑎𝑛 as a reference.
Problem 3.
A symmetrical 3-phase, 440V system supplies a star connected load.
The branch impedances are 𝑍𝑅 = 10∠30° Ω, 𝑍𝑌 = 12∠45° Ω and 𝑍𝐵 =
15∠40° Ω. Assuming the neutral of the supply to be earthed, calculate
the voltage to earth of the star point. Phase sequence is RYB.

Problem 4.
find the reading on the wattmeter when the network shown is
connected to a balanced 400V, 3-phase supply. The phase sequence is
RYB.

Ans: (-1.9627kW)
Problem 5.
In balance 3-phase circuit the current and voltage coils of the
wattmeter are connected as shown in following figure. Show that √3
times of wattmeter reading equals the total reactive power consumed
by the load.

Problem 6.
The input power to a three-phase motor is measured by the two-
wattmeter method. The reading is 5.2kW and -1.7kW, and the line
voltage is 400V. calculate:
a) The total active power;
b) The power factor;
c) The line current.
Ans: -a)3.5kW, b) 0.281 c) 18.0A
