SAMPLE PROJECTS
1 Tanner Springs Park, Portland, USA
Formerly a wetland, the Pearl District was bisected by Tanner Creek and sided by the broad Willamette River. It was the rail yards and the
industry that first claimed and drained the land. Over the past 30 years, a new neighborhood has progressively established itself – young,
mixed, urban, and dynamic. Today the Pearl District is home to families and businesses.
With surgical artistry, the urban skin of one downtown block, 60x60 meters (200x200 feet) was peeled back to create a new city park.
Stormwater runoff from the park block is fed into a natural water feature with a spring and natural cleansing system. The "Art Wall" recycles
historic rail tracks, oscillating in and out and with inlaid hand-painted fused glass pieces with nature images by Herbert Dreiseitl. Ospreys dive
into the water, art performances unfold on the floating deck, children splash and explore, and others take quiet contemplation in this natural
refuge in the heart of the city.
2 Madrid Rio by West 8 and MRIO, Madrid, Spain
The Madrid RIO project has managed to embrace the area's history by renovating its most historical bridges. The Puente de Segovia, the
oldest bridge in Madrid (1582), the Puente de Toledo (1684), and the Puente del Rey (1816) have all been reformed by improving railings,
widening walkways, and adding lanes for the new bike path, the Green Ring (Anillo Verde), that loops around the city.
In addition to restoring these historic monuments along the river, two new bridges were added to the existing bridges and walkways.
3 Umeå Campus Park / Thorbjörn Andersson + Sweco Architects, Umeå, Sweden
Umeå University is a young university, founded in the late 1960s. Here, ca 35 000 students from all over the world study in all fields of
knowledge. Umeå University is located by the coast, approximately 300 km south of the Polar Circle.
A campus park should supply a variety of designated places with the capacity to host informal discussions and exchange of ideas. It is in the
open, non-hierarchical spaces, rather than in lecture auditoriums or at laboratory microscopes that the truly creative interaction between
students, researchers, and teachers occur. The quality of the campus park thus enhances the attractiveness of the university as a whole.
4 City Creek Center, Salt Lake City, Utah
The City Creek development is comprised of two city blocks and includes the re-creation of a flowing creek with waterfalls, fully operable
skylight roofs, dancing fountains, re-use of historical facades, LEED accreditation, and unique use of structural brick. A sky bridge unites the
two blocks, while the 1,225-foot-long creek brings nature into the site. As the architect of record for the retail portion of this massive project
in downtown Salt Lake City, Hobbs+Black Architects was tasked with managing the documentation of a new two-story, 700,000-square-foot
retail center with 111 residential rental units over four levels of underground parking, all within a downtown environment and adjacent to
occupied structures.
5 Hunter’s Point South Park, Queens, New York City
The transformation of Hunter’s Point South in two phases from a contaminated strip of coast in Long Island City, Queens, to an ecologically
sensitive 11-acre park was 11 years in the making. Stretching along the East River south of Gantry Plaza State Park and Steven Holl’s Hunter’s
Point Community Library (see page 16), Hunter’s Point South Park sits on a conveniently sited piece of land that was neglected for decades
before the park opened at the end of last year.
The park was designed by Thomas Balsley Associates (TBA; the firm became SWA/Balsley in 2016) and WEISS/MANFREDI to be a sustainable
storm buffer and public green space for the new Hunter’s Point South development, a 5,000-unit housing complex on the southern shore of
Long Island City.
6 Kolam Ayer ABC Waterfront, Singapore
The first project under the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters Programme, Kolam Ayer ABC Waterfront was officially opened to the public in April
2008. The project features a makeover of a 200-meter stretch of the Kallang River. Floating look-out decks and interactive water features
such as the Archimedes Screw and Water Wheel allow residents to get closer to the water.
