The purpose of reporting the mean and standard deviation is to describe the central tendency and dispersion of data. The mean and standard deviation can be used to create a normally distributed statistical model of the data. Potential sources of error when measuring mass and volume include random statistical fluctuations in samples and inaccurate sample preparation or analysis methods. Errors can be reduced by using proper sample treatment techniques and taking larger samples. When using a graduated cylinder, measurements should be read at eye level to account for the meniscus and obtain accurate results.

QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

1.What is the purpose of reporting your measurements’ mean and standard deviation?

Standard deviation and variance are statistical qualities that gauge dispersion around a central
tendency, most frequently the arithmetic mean, according to Yeo & Cacciatore (2017). They are
descriptive statistics for continuous data that gauge variance around a mean. It is the objective
measurement of opinion or subjective data, which also serves as a basis for comparison.

Lee, D. & Lee, S. (2015) also stated that one might estimate the variation in a set of normally
distributed data more precisely by utilizing the SD in conjunction with the mean. In other words, a
customarily distributed statistical model can be created by analyzing the mean and SD of the data.

2.What are possible sources of error when measuring the mass and volume of materials? How do
you minimize these errors?

When measuring the mass and volume of materials, one of the potential sources of mistake is the
standard deviation or random statistical fluctuations that might happen when using a sample statistic to
estimate a parameter.

Geochemical measurement mistakes result from a need for more precision and accuracy. Even if
an inaccurate sample, preparation, or analysis methods frequently result in errors, these errors can be
removed or, at the very least, significantly reduced.

No matter how large a sample is taken, using the wrong sample treatment techniques will
completely negate the effects of even the most well-designed sampling methodologies.

3.When using the graduated cylinder or pipette, why should you read measurements at eye level?

The cylinder has something called a meniscus which can be a concave or convex surface of the
liquid. When using a graduated cylinder it it important to look at the measurements at eye level in order
for us to get accurate results,
