CHAPTER III.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter provides information about the outline of research methods that were followed in the study. The

chapter discussed the participants, who are the participants and how they are sampled, and the criteria for the

inclusion of the study. Furthermore, the research design that was chosen for the purpose of the study was also

discussed.  The research instrument that will use and how it is validated by previous researchers. This chapter

also entails the data collection procedure in collecting data, the techniques that will interpret the data, and the

scoring and interpretation of our study.

1.1. Research Design

This research aims to study or facilitate, specifically how the modern school system along with society

impacts the mental state of Grade 12 students of ACLC Tacloban who are clinically diagnosed who will be

subjected to a short interview and BDI Tests (Beck Depression Inventory) by Aaron T. Beck. After the

evaluation the student participants are then free to vacate the premises. The final results will then be tallied and

interpreted individually. The researchers well then provide a medium in which the participants are to voice there

concerns and suggestions pertaining to the modern school system.

1.2. Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted at ACLC located at 75 Real ST, Downtown, Tacloban City, 6500 Leyte,

Philippines. This school comprises College and Senior High School and offers Science, Technology,

Engineering and Math (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), General and Academic Strand

(GAS), Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM), Technical (TVL), Information and Communications

Technology (ICT). The scope of researchers’ study includes only the Grade-12 Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS) students.
1.3.Population/Sampling

The researchers gathered five clinically depressed HUMSS students of ACLC Tacloban. The researchers'

population demographic are pertaining to students who are clinically diagnosed as depressed.

The researchers used the snowball sampling technique to accumulate participants/respondents for the

research’s premises tackles sensitive topics such as depression, suicide, and other graphic concepts. The team

has also accumulated participants through referrals to not agitate the said demographic. The researchers’

population demographic are pertaining to students who are clinically diagnosed as depressed.  Among those

students the team has accumulated five(5) willing participants/respondents.

1.4. Research Instrument and Validation

The BECK Depression Inventory (BDI), created by Aaron T. Beck is a multiple choice self-report diagnostic

test or inventory. One of the most widely used psychometric tests for measuring the severity of depression. Also

known for its ease of manufacturing grading. This type of inventory is what the researchers aims to use.

1.5. Data Collection Procedure

The respondents are to be gathered in a room. After a brief introduction of the research team members and

respondents a short interview is follow along with the BDI self-diagnostic test. The respondents’ statements

from the interview

1.6. Ethical Consideration

The respondents were sought out through referrals. Then, the said individuals are contacted via

any means such as via chats or calls. Willing participants are then presented a consent paper

promising to uphold their dignity, protection, privacy, consent, and anonymity. Are to be gathered,

analyzed and interpreted along with BDI Tests results.

1.7. Scoring and Interpretation

After conducting the short interview and self-report diagnostic test, respondents are free to vacate

the premises. Then, the research team will tally the overall score of each participant’s test sheet and

calculate the severity of their depression. Total score 0-13 is considered minimal range, 14-19 is mild,

20-28 is moderate, and 29-63 is severe.
