1. Which of the following impulse responses correspond to stable LTI systems? Justify your answer.
(a) h(t) = e(2−3j)t u(t)
(b) h(t) = e−2t cos (4t) u(t)
(c) h(t) = e2t u(−t + 4) + e−2t u(t − 5)
(d) h(t) = e−t u(1 − 2t)
(e) h(t) = e3t u(−1 − 2t)
(f) h[n] = −n sin ( 2π
3 n) u[n]
(g) h[n] = ( 13 )|n| u[n − 5]
(h) h[n] = (0.8)−n u[−n + 2] − (1.5)−n u[1 − n]}
2. The following are the impulse responses of LTI systems. Determine whether each system is causal or
not. Justify your answers.
(a) h[n] = (5)1−n u[1 − n]
(b) h[n] = n( 13 )n u[n − 1]
(c) h[n] = (0.5)n u[n] + (1.01)n u[1 − n]
(d) h(t) = e−6|t|
(e) h(t) = e−2t u(t + 50)
(f) h(t) = (2e−t − et ) u(t)
3. Compute and sketch the convolution y[n] = x[n] ∗ h[n] for the following pair of signals:
(a) x[n] = (α)−n u[n] , h[n] = (β)n u[n]
(b) x[n] = u[n − 2] − u[n − 8] + u[n − 11] − u[n − 17] , h[n] = u[n] − u[n − 5]
4. We define the area under a continuous-time signal v(t) as,
Z ∞
Av = v(t) dt
−∞

Show that if y(t) = x(t) ∗ h(t), then Ay = Ax Ah .

5. Consider the evaluation of y[n] = (x1 [n] ∗ x2 [n] ∗ x3 [n]), where x1 [n] = (5)−n u[n], x2 [n] = u[n + 3], and
x3 [n] = δ[n] − δ[n − 1].
(a) Evaluate the convolution x1 [n] ∗ x2 [n]
(b) Convolve the result of part(a) with x3 [n] in order to evaluate y[n].
(c) Evaluate the convolution x2 [n] ∗ x3 [n]
(d) Convolve the result of part(c) with x1 [n] in order to evaluate y[n]. Check if you are getting the
same answers in (b) and (d) or not. Comment on your observation.

6. Determine whether each of the statements mentioned below concerning LTI systems is true or false.
Justify your answer.
(a) If h(t) is the impulse response of an LTI system and h(t) is periodic and non-zero, the system is
stable.
(b) The inverse of a causal system is always causal.
(c) If |h[n]| ≥ K for each n, where K is a given number, then the LTI system with h[n] as its impulse
response is stable.
(d) The cascade of a non-causal LTI system with a causal one is necessarily non-causal.
(e) A discrete-time LTI system is causal if and only if its step-response s[n] is zero for n < 0.

7. Compute and sketch the continuous-time convolution of the following signals:

(a)

(b)

(c)

8. If we consider two continuous-time signals x(t) and y(t) expressed as,

x(t) = 0, |t| > T1

y(t) = 0, |t| > T2

The convolution of the above-mentioned signals is,

x(t) ∗ y(t) = 0, |t| > T3

for some positive number T3 . Express T3 in terms of T1 and T2 .
9. From the following impulse response h(t), determine whether the LTI system is (i) Causal, and (ii)
