Eva in her cat

This story confused me, as with most stories by Marquez, what I got out of it was a story of a
beautiful woman who, for some reason, is growing cancerous and her beauty becomes a
disease. I think this is indicative of her being a ghost and her body rotting. The ants, as well,
resemble decay, but I'm not too sure why ants were her ‘blood’.
The story explores the idea of imagination, as Eva is imagining all sorts of things, which
makes me think that the whole story is her imagination, including the boy and the tree and
whatnot. Upon discussing it with some friends, all of us being confused, the story seems to be
that eva was raped by the boy and, when the boy died, an orange tree sprouted over his dead
body. Eva must have died during this time, as she decides she wants an orange and to get it
took 3000 years. And somehow a cat comes into this, likely as eva simply possessed the cat to
be able to eat the orange.
Again, I have absolutely no idea what happened. But being as I am, I tried to assume
what this story might be an analogy for. What I came up with was that it is similar to life and
learning. For instance, going to school and studying “to death” destroys a person's soul. I would
say so of myself, however I think that the reason I am soulless is because I have no loving,
caring, uplifting friends. Anyway, the Idea I settled on was that, though school may, “mess you
up” (as the censored version of the sentence), that eventually, after a long time of decay, and of
bliss, and of losing the things that make you uniquely you, that they become a plague to your
scholarly destiny, that you finally get to reap the fruit you have sown.
That sounds sadistic—which it is and what else am I supposed to make of these
melancholy stories?— but, as the wise phrase of a good friend of mine, such is life. Especially in
this day and age, where everyone is so self-centered as they are, we go through this purgatory
all on our own. Every day I think of what could be someone who I could spend all of time with,
and the terror in my subconscious when I see every chance fade away. It's quite common to
think that the person I like doesn't like me, and in the situations I’ve been in, some of them hate
me. But other times there’s traps. It baffles me that someone could be in a relationship and then
spend “special” time with someone else. Like honestly, what kind of swindling scheme is that??
What could you possibly be planning; or are you just weird like that
I would like to add one more thing that I recognized, it was interesting that Eva had fiery
ants, and the boy had freezing ice stabbing his back. Just to throw it out there, that it really
doesn't matter if you are opposites. It just makes for a good story.
