AIM

To point out the leadership qualities of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw


and analyze the lessons to be learnt.

CHAPTER 2

INTRODUCTION

Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw was born on


03rd April 1914 in Amritsar, Punjab and passed away on 27 June 2008. Indian
people know him as “Sam Bahadur” (Sam the Brave). He was the Chief of the
Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.he was
the first Indian Army officer to be with the service in the British Indian Army
in World War II. He is one of the greatest military commanders in independent
India’s history.

He was a committed person and a great leader for his nation. And also he
was very talented and genuine military officer. He was very loyal to his
subordinates. As a result of his commitment and dedication he was appointed
as the eighth Chief of Army Staff in India.

Under his command, Indian Army Forces conducted victorious


campaigns against Pakistan in the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971 which led to the
creation of Bangaladesh in December 1971. For his service he was awarded the
“Padma Vibushan” and the “Padma Bushan” the second and third highest
civilian awards of India.

CHAPTER 3

CHRONOLOGY

1914 Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw was born on 3rd April
in Amritsar, Punjab.

1919 Started primary schooling in Punjab, and then went to Sherwood


College, Nainital.

1929 He left the college at the age of fifteen with a distinction in the
school certificate of the Cambridge board.

1932 He was selected as part of the first batch of cadets to attend to


Indian Military Academy.

1935 He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant and joined the 2 nd


Battalion, The Royal Scots at British United Stations at Lahore.

1936 He was promoted to Lieutenant.

1940 During the World War II, Manekshaw was given acting or
temporary ranks, an Acting Captain and Acting Major.

1940 He was promoted to Captain.

1943 He was promoted to Major.

1945 He was promoted to Lieutenant- Colonel.

1946 He was promoted to Colonel.

1947 He was promoted to Brigadier.

1950 He was promoted to Brigadier, Indian Army.

1957 He was promoted to Major General.

1962 He was promoted to Lieutenant General.

1969 Manekshaw became the eighth Chief of Army Staff in Indian Army.

1973 He was promoted to Field Marshal.

2008 He was died.

CHAPTER 4

EARLY LIFE

Sam Manekshaw was born on 3rd April 1914 in Amritsar, Punjab. His
father-Hormusji Manekshaw was a doctor and his mother was Hilla who had
moved from city of Valsad to Punjab. His father also a military man. He had
served in the British Indian Army as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps. He
was participated in World War I. Manekshaw was the fifth child from his six
children family. His younger brother Jemi also a military man. He served in the
royal Indian Air Force as a doctor and he was the first Indian solider who has
awarded as the air surgeon’s wings from the naval air station Pensacola in the
USA.

Manekshaw completed his primary schooling in Punjab and he entered to


Sherwood College in Nainital for his secondary education. In age of fifteen he
left the school with the best of success. He achieved distinction in the school
certificate of the Cambridge Board. Then he wanted to study medicine. He
asked from his father to send him London to achieve his target. But his father
neglected his request because he had not old enough by that time.

But in the same time period, the Indian Military College Committee
(since 1931), recommended the establishment of a military academy in India to
train Indians for commissioning to the army. They got 18-20 years old young
males for three years course. Candidates were selected from an examination
done by public service commission.

Indian Military Academy established in early months in 1932 and


examinations were held on June and July. Manekshaw was very disappointed
about his father’s refusal. Because of that he decided to apply for Military
Academy. He was selected as sixth cadet from fifteen cadets in first batch of
the Indian Military Academy.

CHAPTER 5

PERSONAL LIFE

Sam Manekshaw got married on 22nd April 1939 on Bombay. His


wife was Siloo Bode. They had two daughters call Sherry and Maya (Maja),
born on 11th January 1940 and 24th September 1945 respectively. Sherry
married to Battiwala and they had a daughter named Brandy. Maya worked in
British Airways as a stewardess. She married a boy call Daruwala, a pilot.
They had two sons called Raoul Sam and Jehan Sam.

CHAPTER 6

MILITARY CAREER

Sam Manekshaw served in four decades and five wars in 1934 to


1973. Most of them were ended with the victory.

World War II

Defense of Sitlany Bridge, Burma, 1941 Captain Manekshaw


received nine bullets in the lungs, liver and kidney. He was critically injured.
He moved to hospital. Fearing the worst, Major General DT Cowan quickly
pinned his own military cross ribbon saying “A dead person cannot be awarded
a military cross”. When a surgeon asked what had happened to him, he said, he
was kicked by a donkey.

Chinese Aggression in 1961

Towards the end of World War II, Manekshaw was sent as staff
officer to General Daisy in Indo-China where, after the Japanese surrender, he
helped rehabilitate over 10,000 POWs. Prime Minister JL Nehru rushed him to
contain advancing Chinese Aggression. His first order of the day was “There
will be no withdrawal without orders – and those orders shall never be issued”
Chinese never got an inch after that.

Pakistan Invasion of Kashmir

Manekshaw was in charge of operations in Army HQ. Displayed


incisive grasp of situation and acumen for planning – noticed by superior
commanders.

Attacking East Pakistan in 1965

As the GOC I C Eastern Command, advised against attacking East


Pakistan stating the people would be the many sufferers. The wisdom of this
advice dawned when Indian Army fought with Pakistan Army in East Pakistan
in 1971 people of East Pakistan welcomed and helped Indian army.

Surgical Strike on East Pakistan in 1971

Mrs. Gandhi wanted to swift a surgical strike on East Pakistan in


June 1971 to install a Government led by Mujib-Ur-Rehman. Refusing to be
coerced he said “If ordered it will be done, but I guarantee a defeat… and I
have following reasons to say so,
First – In June the monsoon would render movement in the Eastern
region near impossible.
Second – Open Himalayan mountain passes will not permit lifting
at least two infantry divisions from the Chinese front.

December 1971

In December 1971 India achieved a historical military victory.


Pakistani Army was checkmated in 14 days flat with a total of 45000 Pakistan
soldiers and 45000 civilians taken as POW. Manekshaw’s strategic and
operational knowledge helps Indian pincers cut through Pakistani forces butter
through knife.

CHAPTER 7

LEADERSHIP QULITIES

a. Courage. Courage is the mental that recognize physical and


moral. Without courage there is virtue field marshal Sam
Manekshaw had that physical courage to overcome the any
hardship. As a example he do motivate and gave moral courage to
his subordinates to do any hard task and each and every wars that
they done by controlling himself and giving moral courage to his
troops. Once he had nine bullets at the World War II and most of
the people thought he died. But he recovered and again came to
the battle field. That shows how the courage he had been. At war
he never wants to withdraw. He always commanded to be in front
of the enemy. Whatever strength enemy has he never gone up and
others also not let to give it up.

b. Initiative. Initiative is the ability to decide and acts on our own


without waiting to somebody to tell you what to do. In here we

have to act without prompting from above. Manekshaw is vey


initiative leader. That’s why he became as a great commander in
short time period. Just after the order comes he will initiate the
mission from his knowledge and ability. And work for it until it
becomes success.

c. Integrity. Integrity is a quality of being honest and having


strong moral principles. It is a combination of honesty, sincerely,
reliability and loyalty. He accomplished all his duties and
responsibilities in punctuality without doing any mistake
throughout the humanitarian operations. He was humble,
generous man. He was very brave. He didn’t destroy the
respectfulness of his service expecting promotions, colors, ranks
or medals. As an example once Mrs. Indira Ghandhi tried to
involve with the military actions when Pakistani war going on. By
that time Manekshaw told her “you mind your own business I will
mind mine. You kiss your own sweetheart I will kiss mine. I don’t
interfere politically, as long as nobody interferes with me in the
army”. If he is person who is thinking about his rank and medals
him will never talk like that. And his humanity is common for
friendly forces as well as enemy forces too.

d. Will power. A leader must have the determination to see task


carried through not only against the enemy but often against the
advice of experts. The peace and war leader must overcome the
difficulties to achieve the aim.

e. Knowledge. The certainty of proper performance of duty is a


quality the leader must develop. The dependable leader can be
realized upon to carry out actively. At the surgical strike on East
Pakistan in 1971 he was ordered by the Government to attack
them by Easter region. But he refused the order and guaranteed a
defeat. He explained the reasons for the defeat because he is very
knowledgeable about the land of the Eastern region.

f. Enthusiasm. Field marshal same Manekshaw had to


commands battle in many regions. So the same procedure of
fighting couldn’t be followed. Then Manekshew planned the
battle and launched. Leader must know his job knowledge give
confidence which in make his subordinates confident on him.
Leader must know his men also and their background and
knowledge, abilities, capabilities and skills. If only then leader
can achieve any task with the maximum efficiency.

g. Personality. Manekshaw had a good personality. Once he had


a branded motor bicycle. Pakistan president purchased that
bicycle for Rs.1000 but didn’t give the money. After wining
Pakistani war Manekshaw said, “Pakistan president didn’t pay
Rs.1000 for my motor bicycle that day but today he paid half of
his country for that’’

Once who analysis figures of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw


who was commanded in Indian army in new direction. There is lot of
lessons to be learnt from him as a military leader.

When we consider his childhood we can see he is always


courage. In the age of fifteen he asked from his father to study medicine. It
means how much courage he had. He is not a lazy person. He took all the
obstacles as the competitions. He worked hard for achieve them all. He is
very brave. His decisions and command show how much brave he is. He
knows how to encourage people. Once he met a soldier who had three
bullets in the war. Manekshaw encouraged him saying “You received three
at this age; when I was your age I received nine bullets and look today, I’m
the commander in Chief of the Indian Army. We can take those qualities to
our lives. We can improve our career by practicing them.

And other thing what we can learn is he was very straight


person. He always spoke truth. He never consider to whom he is talking to.

Because he wanted to speak truth. We can realize it from the saying that he
did to Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is truly an example which we


can learn become an outstanding character. We can concentrate on his life
and develop all the good qualities which had made him such an energetic,
honorable, respectful person.

CONCLUTION

This script will give some knowledge and facts about Field
Marshal Sam Manekshaw and his leadership qualities.

In his life he had under go so many problems, challenges as


well as difficulties because of so many reasons. But he crossed all barriers
courageously; finally he got absolute success on his personal as well as
military life. He gained leadership and led his nation to correct path. So his
character is a good example for us.

He was perfect leader for his subordinates, Good husband for


his wife, and great father for his daughters and amazing person for the
nation.
