Week 3
Engineering Reasoning Framework: Intellectual Standards
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this week’s lesson, you will be able to:
1. State and explain the nine universal intellectual standards in the engineering reasoning
framework;
2. Apply the intellectual standards to elements of thought in an engineering-related article.
Recap
Based on this week’s lecture:
1. What are the nine intellectual standards in the Engineering Reasoning Framework (Paul-Elder
Critical Thinking Framework)?
2. What does each intellectual standard refer to/ mean?
Activity
In last week’s lesson, you identified the elements of thought of two articles. In a small group, select
one of the articles for analysis as follows:
a) Based on the elements of thought identified in your selected article, apply the appropriate
intellectual standards to each element of thought. You may use the table in the appendix to
organize your analysis.
b) Once the analysis is complete, select three elements of thought which you have analysed. For
each element, select any three intellectual standards that you have applied to it. Write one
paragraph to present your analysis for each element of thought. Below is an example of such a
paragraph.
Assignment 1
For Assignment 1, you are required to write a critical analysis essay. Here is an example with
