Activity Research Log Input Devices

This document discusses input and output devices for computers. It lists five input devices (keyboard, mouse, microphone, joystick, camera) and describes their primary functions. It also discusses the interfaces of these devices and their special characteristics. For output devices, it lists four types (monitor, projector, GPS, printer) and their functions. It discusses interfaces of output devices and researching the future of input devices. The document also lists advantages and disadvantages of video/sound cards and describes eight types of I/O ports and their functions.

LOG Activity 5

1. Activity Research Log Input Devices

I. Investigate and list five types of input devices not listed in question five.
 Keyboard: A keyboard is for putting information including letters, words, and
numbers into your computer. You press the individual buttons on the
keyboard when you type.

 Mouse: small, movable device that lets you control a range of things on a
computer.

 Microphone: enable many types of audio recording devices for purposes

including communications of many kinds, as well as music vocals, speech
and sound recording.

 Joysticks:  are often used to control video games, and usually have one or
more pushbuttons whose state can also be read by the computer.

 Camera: A camera is an optical instrument that can capture an image. Most

cameras can capture 2D images, with some more advanced models being
able to capture 3D images
II. Describe their primary function and where they are best used.

 Keyboard: It is the primary device used to enter text. A keyboard

typically contains keys for individual letters, numbers, and special
characters, as well as keys for specific functions.

 Mouse: controls a cursor in a GUI (graphical user interface) for

pointing, moving, and selecting text, icons, files, and folders on your
computer.

 Microphone:  translates sound vibrations in the air into electronic

signals and scribes them to a recording medium or over a
loudspeaker

 Joysticks: controlling the movement of the cursor or a pointer in a

computer device. The pointer/cursor movement is controlled by
maneuvering a lever on the joystick

 Camera: optical instrument to capture still images or to record

moving images, which are stored in a physical medium such as in a
digital system or on photographic film. A camera consists of a lens
which focuses light from the scene, and a camera body which holds
the image capture mechanism
III. Describe the interface of the five devices and any special characteristics.
 Keyboard: allows users to provide keystroke input to programs even if the
native technology does not contain a keyboard.

 Mouse:  can be used for cursor movement or for computer switch access.

 Microphone:  a microphone interface is an audio interface. These

interfaces essentially allow communication between various audio input
and output devices and digital software.

 Joystick: has a 4-channel joystick controller. requires minimal external RC

passive components. uses quad slope integration type A/D converters.

 Camera: The Camera Interface block or CAMIF is the hardware block

that interfaces with different image sensor interfaces and provides
a standard output that can be used for subsequent image processing.

IV. Research and report on the future of input devices.

 Input Devices are the most important development in Human-Machine

Technology. An input device is any hardware device that transmits data of
some kind, allowing you to interact with and control it. Transforming our
world and making it limitless, Input Devices facilitate seamless interactions
between man and machine, enabling you to perform any task by facilitating
two-way communication successfully. Input devices, such as those seen on
our mobile phones, laptops, refrigerators, remote controls, and watches,
have come a long way since they first developed centuries ago. One of the
earliest input devices that have been documented were keypunches which
came around in the 1800s in the form of Jacquard loom cards. While there
may have been some ways prior to this to input data into switches and
dials, the keypunch and the punch-card methods were among the first
Input devices to be widely adopted for entering, storing, and retrieving
data.

V. Choose one device from the list below and give a detailed description of its
primary operation.
a. Scanners
b. Barcode readers
c. Touchscreens
d. Gamming consoles

b. Gaming Consoles: a specialized computer system designed for interactive

video gameplay and display. A video game console functions like a PC and is built
with the same essential components, including a central processing unit (CPU),
graphics processing unit (GPU) and random-access memory (RAM).

2. Activity Research Log Output Devices

I. Investigate and list four types of output devices
 Monitor:  an output device that displays information in pictorial or textual
form

 Projector:  an optical device that projects an image onto a surface,

commonly a projection screen. Most projectors create an image by shining
a light through a small transparent lens, but some newer types of
projectors can project the image directly, by using lasers.

 GPS: The Global Positioning System, originally Navistar GPS, is a satellite-

based radionavigation system owned by the United States government and
operated by the United States Space Force.
Printer: a printer is a peripheral machine which makes a persistent representation
of graphics or text, usually on paper.

II. Describe their primary function and where they are best used.
 Monitor: displays information in pictorial or textual form. A discrete
monitor comprises a visual display, support electronics, power supply,
housing, electrical connectors, and external user controls.

 Projector: projects an image (or moving images) onto a surface, commonly

a projection screen. Most projectors create an image by shining a light
through a small transparent lens, but some newer types of projectors can
project the image directly, by using lasers.

 GPS:  provides people with current positioning, navigation, and time

services.

 Printer: accepts text and graphic output from a computer and transfers
the information to paper.

III. Describe the interface of the four devices and any special characteristics.
 Monitor: Interface monitoring monitors the physical status of an interface.
When you configure a redundancy group, you can specify a set of interfaces
that the redundancy group is to monitor for status (or “health”) of interface
to determine whether the interface is up or down.
IV. Research and report on the future of input devices.

3. List two advantages and two disadvantages of video and sound cards
4. List and describe the function of eight types of I/O ports. Include pictures.
