Problem Set 3

1. Find the surface area of S where:

(a) S is the parametric surface

r (u, v) = ui + 2 (u − v) j + v k, (u, v) ∈ R

with R = {(u, v) : 1 ≤ u ≤ 2, 1 ≤ v ≤ 3}.

(b) S is the ellipse cut on the plane

2x + 3y + 6z = 60,

r (u, v) = 2i + 3uj + 4v k, (u, v) ∈ R

with R = {(u, v) : 0 ≤ u ≤ 1, 0 ≤ v ≤ 2}.

(b) f (x, y, z) = x + y + 1 and S is the image of R in the graph of

z = x + 4y − 1,

where R = (x, y) : x2 + y 2 ≤ 1 .

(c) f (x, y, z) = z and S is the surface

3. The temperature at a point in space is given by the function

T (x, y, z) = z 2 − xy.

Heat flows from regions of high temperature to regions of low temperature,

and the rate of heat flow is proportional to the rate at which temperature
changes. That is, heat flow is given by

F (x, y, z) = −∇T (x, y, z)

(assuming a constant of proportionality equal to 1). The rate at which heat

flows across a surface S is given by the flux of the heat flow F across S ,
¨
F · n dS.
S

If S is the parametric surface

r(u, v) = u cos (v) i + u sin (v) j + v k, (u, v) ∈ R

where R = {(u, v) : 0 ≤ u ≤ 1, 0 ≤ v ≤ 2π} and S is oriented so the unit

normal vector slants upwards, find the rate at which heat flows across S .

4. Evaluate ¨

(a) S is the parametric surface

r (u, v) = 4ui + 3uj + v k, (u, v) ∈ R

with R = {(u, v) : −1 ≤ u ≤ 1, 0 ≤ v ≤ 1}.

(b) R = {(x, y) : 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, −x ≤ y ≤ x} and S is the image of R in the

graph of

Find the integral of F over S (the surface of the cylinder, oriented with an
outward pointing normal vector).

6. The equations
z = 12, x2 + y 2 ≤ 25,
describe a disc of radius 5 lying in the plane z = 12. Suppose that r is the
position vector field

x2 y dV
B
