Activity Outcomes:
By the end of this hands-on session, you should be able to:
• Show steps to install DNS Server and create a Primary zone in Windows Server 2019.
Prerequisites:

In order to complete these tasks, students need to have a Windows Server 2019 installed.

BACKGROUND:
Domain Name System (DNS), defined in several Request for Comments (RFC) documents, performs a single
task: translating user-friendly hostnames to IPv4 or IPv6 addresses. In Windows Server 2019 provides the DNS
server role to enable you to provide name resolution services to devices and computers in your organization’s
network infrastructure. The first stage to provide name resolution is to deploy the DNS server role on Windows
Server 2019 server computers.

REQUIREMENT TOOLS:

• Personal Computer or any device with at least dual-core Intel i5 or i7 CPU (Or AMD) and Virtualization
Support.
• At least 8GB FREE memory (16GB or 32GB is best) on the host operating system.
• VMware Workstation 16 Pro application as a platform to running Windows Server 2019.
• Windows Server 2019 evaluation media.
• Window 10 evaluation media
• Screen Recording Tools

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Show steps on how to install DNS Server in Windows Server 2019.
2. Your steps should include all the following activities:
a. Downloading and installing components
b. Choose Active Directory Domain Services and DNS Server as a server role.
c. Creating the new forest and provide a root domain name.
Root domain name: <your name.com>
d. Provide the Directory Service Restore Mode (DSRM) password.
e. Confirmation of NetBIOS domain name.
f. Verify the Active Directory Domain Service installation in Server Manager.
3. Show steps on how to create a Primary zone in Windows DNS Server. Your steps should include all the
following activities:
a. Open the Server Manager → Tool → DNS.
b. Add forwarder ip address 8.8.8.8
c. On Forward lookup Zones, Add an A record “ mypc.<yourname.com> “ with your Windows 10
client ip address.
d. On forward lookup zones, add a CNAME record such below info:
Alias name: win10
Fully qualified domain name (FQDN) : mypc.<yourdomain>.com

4. Configure Client DNS Server address point to your DNS windows server IP Address.
5. Provide the results on nslookup <yourname.com> by using command prompt on Windows 10 client.
Please provide both lookup for A record and CNAME record.
