Remainder Theorem and Factor Theorem

The document discusses the remainder theorem, factor theorem, and their applications in polynomial long division. The remainder theorem states that if a polynomial f(x) is divided by (x - a), the remainder is f(a). The factor theorem states that if f(a) = 0, then (x - a) is a factor of f(x). Several example problems are given applying these theorems to find quotients, remainders, and factorizations of polynomials.

Remainder theorem and factor theorem

l Division algorithm: If f ( x ) is divided by p ( x ) , the quotient is p ( x ) and the

remainder is r ( x) ,then f ( x ) can be expressed by the following algorithm:

f ( x ) = p ( x ) q( x) + r ( x )

where, the degree of r ( x) is smaller than the degree of p ( x ) .

l Remainder theorem: If f ( x ) is divided by ( x - a ) , then the remainder is f ( a )

l Factor theorem: If f ( a) = 0 , then f ( x) = ( x - a) q ( x) .

l Long division and synthetic division.
