REFLECTION PAPER

History enables people to realize and comprehend the events that happened in the past in
which it shows how it shaped the country as it is today. With this, the people can learn from the
past in order to prevent making mistakes in the present and the future that makes the society
move towards a better direction. According to Mohammed, B. (N.D.), “History is the best
teacher of all categories.”. History shaped not only the society of the country but also
architecture. With architectural history, theories were made about architectural styles varying
from its time periods and masterpieces in which it shows how architecture evolves from the past
to the present.
In the history of architecture, there are different kinds of ideas, ideologies, and discourses
depending on the culture of the country and the time periods in which it influenced the practice
of architecture. With this, it became the foundation which will be interpreted and assessed by an
architect in which it will enhance critical thinking in terms of architecture. For architects, a
thorough understanding of historical processes such as comprehending the cultural and historical
background is essential in order to complement their architectural work effectively to its
surroundings.
Since architecture is changing depending on time period and styles, it still retains its
original identity. These styles of architecture symbolizes the historical eras of the past in which it
still brings a huge impact in the present. The defining principles of good design are indicated by
the constants over various time periods. These time periods leave a trace of the past in the
present in which it still can be used for modern architecture such as using bamboo or other
indigenous material for the facade of the building. With this, an architect must unavoidably trace
the historical breadcrumbs of architecture.
As it states in the video “Mapaghandaan ang Kinabukasan”. In that sense, Architecture
may help in preparing for the future such as averting disasters. Architectural history showed how
people prepared for disasters through their built environments. With this, it has been led to
having trial and error which it developed in a few generations.This provides evidence of how
human activity affects the environment. Architects must learn to comprehend how a region's
architectural heritage reveals its history of tragedies. With this, it gives an understanding on the
various strategies that can address the related dangers and disasters to provide the safety of the
people. Since architecture is evolving, it provides new innovative designs for the people in which
it can help in preparing for the future and averting disasters.
In conclusion, the history of architecture is not just a socio-historical process, but it tells a
story to people on how things evolved from the past to the future. With this, architects in the past
developed architectural distinctive styles due to having an understanding of the cultural
background of that country and its history. Having such awareness, these architects provide
designs that are unique in which it shaped the identity of the country. Therefore, having a clear
understanding of the cultural and historical background is essential to be able to design a
structure or building that compliments the design to its context of the site.
