Activity:
Research a video on the internet regarding mending and patching fishing nets.
Analysis:
Discuss the procedures for mending and patching fishing nets based on the search
video.
Answer: According to the video that I watched, net mending is like solving a
puzzle. You need to start at the top and work from side to side to the bottom.
Mending starts and ends on three bars. Before you start to sew, you've got to trim
the hole so there are three bars on the top and three bars on the bottom. Every
other knot around the perimeter of the hole must be a pick up or a sider. Choose
the starting three bars at the top, and if there are no starting three bars that you
want, cut one in. It could be either the left or right side. Work around one side of
the hole, one measure at a time, until you encounter three bars. These three bars
could be a pick up or a sider. Stop and think about which cut to eliminate the
three bars without creating another three bars near the start. If you create another
one farther away from the start, that’s okay, and stop when you reach the bottom
of the hole. If there are three bars left, leave it, and you can end on that one. If
there aren’t three bars, don’t worry. When you finish trimming down the other
side, there will be a bottom to end on. Return to the top and work down on the
other side on the same matter. Leave your starting three bars intact and work one
measure at a time, trimming your three bars to pick up the siders. If you did it
correctly, one of the three bars should be left at the bottom of the hole.
On the other hand, the procedure for patching fishing nets first squares off
the damage, removing all three bars. Count the number of meshes missing in
each direction and cut a patch one mesh shorter each way. You need to add a
half mesh to each side to sew it in and begin sewing in the corner. The pick up
you begin with becomes the three bars you finish with.

Application:
Discuss the procedure in mending, patching of fishing nets.
Answer: The first step in mending the fishing nets is to cut the hole. In cutting
the hole, you need to follow the following procedure: Arrange and support the net
so that it is pulling in the right direction with the rows of knots in line. Select the
starting knot at the highest point of the hole and cut away one bar, leaving three
bars for the knot. Working down the left hand side of the hole, cut away two bars
from each knot, leaving two bars to within a few meshes of the bottom of the
hole, starting at the top again, immediately to the right of the starting knot, work
down the right hand side of the hole, cutting away two bars from each knot and
leaving two bars to within a few meshes of the bottom of the hole. Cut two bars
away from each remaining knot, alternately on the left and right hand side of the
hole until a finishing knot remains, when only one bar is cut away. After cutting is
the mending procedure. There is also a procedure in mending first. With the
exception of the starting and finishing knot, every knot formed must complete a
mesh with four equal sides. When the starting knot is made, no mesh is formed;
when the finishing knot is made, two meshes are formed. Each half mesh row,
whether moving from right to left or left to right across the hole, must be
completed before the next is started. Each change of direction across the hole, at
the end of each row, is made by progressing to a side knot. With one exception,
after making a side knot, the next knot will be a half mesh knot, a pick up knot
followed by a half mesh knot, or a finishing knot, A side knot cannot follow a side
knot on the same side of the hole. This would entail progressing down the hole
by a full mesh (two rows) instead of the specified half mesh (one row).
On the other hand, the procedure in patching fishing nets first, make a
quick mesh count of the width and depth of the damaged area so that a piece of
netting of sufficient size can be chosen for the patch. The patch is cut one mesh
smaller in depth and width than the hole to allow for the half mesh formed on
each side when sewing it into the hole. When putting in a patch it is not essential
to cut out a square or rectangular hole and then a patch to fit it. The most
commonly used method of patching is to cut out part of the hole and then part of
the, patch to fit. Join this in, then cut out a further section of the hole and a
corresponding section of patch to sew to it. Continue cutting the hole, cutting the
patch and joining until the job is completed.
Moreover, when lacing, the twine is passed behind the knot on each side of
the tear and tied with a double hitch, on one side of the tear only, about every 6 to
12 inches. The essential thing in lacing is to leave sufficient slack in the mending
twine so that some natural adjustment can take place when a strain is placed on
the laced section of netting
Evaluation:
In your own understanding, differentiate net mending and patching. Also discuss, net
mending, patching, and lacing.
Answer: Mending is to repair and rebuild the damaged fishing net, and it is a long
process compared to patching because you need to sew from top to bottom and
from side to side. While patching is to cover the missing net hole. It is the fastest
way because all you have to do is join the cut patch to the missing net hole and
make it fit before sewing every corner of it.
Net mending and patching are strategies for repairing damaged nets. It
explains how to hold the net, tie various types of knots, and repair small and
large holes. While lacing is only used to provide a temporary solution, it is
usually removed as soon as possible after the damage has been repaired.
