Install Electrical Metallic/Non-
Metallic Conduit
What I Need to Know

Content Standard

Demonstrates an understanding of the principles in performing

roughing-in activities.

Performance Standard

Independently performs roughing-in activities based on the Philippine

Electrical Code (PEC) and National Electrical Code (NEC).

Unit Code: ELC741301

Learning Objectives

At the end of the module you should be able to:

1. Identify the different types of electrical conduit.

2. Describe the different type of electrical conduit an its purpose.
3. Apply their new knowledge in the worksite.

1
What I Know

Let us determine how much you already know about Installation of Electrical
Metallic/Non-Metallic Conduit by answering the questions below.

I. Multiple Choice: Write your answers in your notebook.

1. What is the type of conduit that is lighter than a rigid steel conduit?
A. Rigid Steel Conduit B. Intermediate Metal Conduit
C. Electrical Metallic Tubing D. Rigid PVC Conduit
2. A type of conduit that is commonly used with outdoor equipment, such as air
conditioner units.
A. Flexible Metal Conduit B. Liquid-tight Flexible Metal Conduit
C. Electrical Metallic Tubing D. Electrical Non-Metallic Tubing
3. It is a type of conduit that is used in dry indoor locations, often for short runs between
a wall box.
A. Rigid Steel Conduit B. Flexible Metal Conduit
C. Electrical Non-Metallic Tubing D. Rigid PVC Conduit
4. What type of conduit that is commonly made of galvanized steel but can also be
aluminium?
A. Rigid PVC Conduit B. Electrical Metallic Tubing
C. Electrical Non-Metallic Tubing D. Flexible Metal Conduit

5. It is a type of conduit that is commonly used inside walls.

A. Flexible Metal Conduit B. Liquid-tight Flexible Metal Conduit
C. Electrical Metallic Tubing D. Electrical Non-Metallic Tubing

II. True or False: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the
stamen is wrong. Write the answer in your notebook.
_____ 1. Rigid steel conduit, or RSC, is heavy-duty galvanized steel tubing that
is installed with threaded fittings.
_____ 2.Liquid-tight flexible metal conduit (LFMC) is a non-special type of
flexible metal conduit that has a plastic coating and is used with
sealed fittings to make it watertight.
_____ 3. Flexible metal conduit (FMC) is also called "Greenfield," after the name
of its inventor. It has a spiral construction that makes it flexible so it
can snake through walls and other structures.
_____ 4.Electrical non-metallic tubing (ENT) is flexible corrugated plastic
tubing that is not moisture-resistant and flame-retardant.
_____ 5. Rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is similar to plastic plumbing pipe and
is installed with plastic fittings that are glued in place. It can be bent

after being heated in a portable heater box.

Lesson

1 Electrical Conduit

An electric conduit is electrical tubing used for protection and routing of

electrical wiring. They can be made from a variety of materials. It is generally installed
by electricians at the electrical equipment's installation site.

What’s In

Why is it important to know the different types of electrical conduit?

What are the things to be considered before installing these types of conduit?

What’s New

You are working as an electrician in a construction firm. You are task to install
conduit in a dump location.

1. What type of conduit is suitable for a dump location?

2. Is it safe to install conduit in a dump location?

3
What is It

ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

7 Types of Electrical Conduit

1. Rigid Steel Conduit (RSC)

• Rigid steel conduit, or RSC, is heavy-duty galvanized steel tubing that is
installed with threaded fittings.

(It is typically used outdoors to provide protection from damage and can also provide
structural support for electrical cables, panels, and other equipment. RSC is sold in
10- and 20-foot lengths and has threads on both ends.)

2. Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC)

• Intermediate metal conduit, or IMC, is a thinner, lighter-weight version of rigid

steel conduit and is approved for use in all of the same applications as RSC.

(Because IMC is lighter and easier to work with than RSC, it is more common in new
construction.)

3. Rigid PVC Conduit

• Rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is similar to plastic plumbing pipe and is

installed with plastic fittings that are glued in place. It can be bent after being
heated in a portable heater box.

4
(Because the conduit tubing and fittings are glued together, the conduit assemblies
can be watertight, making PVC suitable for direct burial in the ground for many
applications. It is also allowed in corrosive environments.)

4. Electrical Non-Metallic Tubing (ENT)

• Electrical non-metallic tubing (ENT) is flexible corrugated plastic tubing that

is moisture-resistant and flame-retardant.

(It is easy to bend and installs with snap-lock or glued plastic fittings. Unlike EMT,
non-metallic tubing cannot install in exposed locations, so it is commonly used inside
walls.)

5. Flexible Metal Conduit

• Flexible metal conduit (FMC) is also called "Greenfield," after the name of its
inventor. It has a spiral construction that makes it flexible so it can snake
through walls and other structures.

(Standard FMC is used in dry indoor locations, often for short runs between a wall
box)

6. Liquid-tight Flexible Metal Conduit

5
• Liquid-tight flexible metal conduit (LFMC) is a special type of flexible metal
conduit that has a plastic coating and is used with sealed fittings to make it
watertight.

(It is commonly used with outdoor equipment, such as air conditioner units.)

7. Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

Another example of a rigid electrical conduit is

EMT (electrical metal tubing), which is most
commonly made of galvanized steel but can also
be aluminium. EMT is also called "thin-wall"
conduit because it is thin and lightweight,
especially compared to RSC.

(EMT is installed with couplings and fittings that are secured with setscrew or
compression-type fasteners. The tubing itself is not threaded as is RMC. Common
sizes of EMT include 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch, and 1-inch.)
