My name is Sarah Beth Davis and I am an alumna of the Art Education

Program of Winthrop University. I graduated from Winthrop University in
May 2019 with a BA in Fine Arts, and in 2020 with a Master of Arts in Teaching
in K-12 Art.

I worked at Kidcreate Studio, an art studio for children 3 to 12 years old. I

taught classes and camps, hosted birthday parties, and prepared and taught
lessons. I completed my fall internship at Clover High School's Ninth Grade
Campus, in Clover, SC. I taught Art II, and co-taught Art I and 3-D Design I. I
completed my full time spring internship at Riverview Elementary School in
Fort Mill, SC. I taught K-5 art while using a wide range of media, student
choice, and pushing my students to think not only creatively, but critically.

I began my teaching career at Windsor Elementary in Richland School

District Two. I gained experience teaching virtually, in a dual modality setting,
and on a cart in my first year of teaching in the midst of the COVID-19
pandemic in 2020. I wrote and taught engaging lessons that both pushed
my students' creative thinking and critical thinking skills. I teach grades K-5,
and begun teaching 4K once a week in the spring of the 21-22 school year. I
created the school's yearbook and helped with the Run Hard program as an
assistant coach in 21-22.

In my free time, I enjoy photography and painting. I originally became an

artist because I love the freedom it provides people to create and express
themselves in a variety of ways. I then decided to combine my passion and
love of teaching and learning with my passion for art and creativity.
Teaching has allowed me to show students how to discover new things and
find and express their creative energy. Helping students figure out their
place in the art world or push their passion for art is the way that I can best
pursue both of my life's passions.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that each student has their own unique art style. I think that students
should be allowed to show their style in the projects they make at school,
starting at a young age. Student art should be individualized and not look the
same across the board. I encourage my students to do their best in all of their
art, as well as give them advice that reflects their art styles and help them
where they struggle. As a teacher, I do my best to be supportive and hands-on
when helping students make adjustments to their work, making video
tutorials, and doing media demonstrations in class. I enjoy encouraging my
students to push the limits of what they know and to try taking a risk when
making art because it helps them realize their potential. I aim to push my
students’ knowledge of art and the world around them. I want to make my
future students think and see things with a new artistic eye and differently
than they saw the world before. I also hope to focus on arts integration. I
believe that by bringing the other subjects into the art room, students can
make important connections between what they learn in school and the real
world a lot easier. I hope to push my future students by challenging their
natural creativeness and abilities. I think that it is important for students to
understand art processes and why the creative process for different mediums
is important.

I find educational theories to be fascinating. One theorist I find interesting is H.

Gardner who proposed a U-curve theory. Gardner created a U-curve that
described artistic development in art, saying that they “peak” in early
childhood, then it drops during the “middle years of schooling”, and then teens
can regain a stronghold in the arts by studying it and working on their own art.
Young children enjoy art class and think it is fun, while older students (some
middle school and high school) do not always have that same raw enthusiasm
for art, and need a little bit more of a push. The older students have to work a
little harder to find how to express their creativity and it is something that is not
often seen among young students. I also like Gardner’s theory because it
supports the idea that everyone possesses creative ability, even if some have to
work at it a little more than others, which is an idea that I strongly believe in.
Everyone has the ability to be creative, but everyone has to work at different
levels of difficulty to achieve their end goal. With younger students, I believe
that their enthusiasm for the subject outweighs the thoughts they may have
about struggling creatively for the most part, as the COVID Pandemic has had
some effect on student creativity in general.. In contrast to Gardner's theory, I
believe that all students "peak" in art at different times in their lives, and that
they may have many "peaks" as they move through school.
