Ranking of liturgical days:


1. Solemnity – highest ranking of liturgical days that replaces Sunday celebrations
in order to celebrate the most significant days in the liturgical calendar
2. Feast – masses that commemorate significant people such as saints
3. Memorial
a. Obligatory Memorial – masses in memorial to saints
b. Optional Memorial – masses in memory of someone that is only attended
by selected people or by a specific community
4. Ferial Weekday - any weekday not celebrated on a Sunday or any saint’s feast

What is meant by “votive mass”?
Mass celebrated for a special intention.
How are votive masses celebrated?
It can be celebrated in any weekday except for the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and
Easter Season, Ash Wednesday, and Holy Week.
