Supplementary Problems On Balanced Three-Phase System

This document contains 6 supplementary problems related to three-phase AC generators and systems. Problem 1 describes a delta-connected generator supplying 200A at 440V with 0.6 lagging power factor. Problem 2 describes a wye-connected generator supplying 100A at 240V with 0.9 lagging power factor. Problem 3 asks the reader to calculate line currents and power absorbed for a wye-connected system given line voltage and impedance values.

Supplementary Problems:

1. Example 1: Each phase of a delta-

connected 3Ø AC generator supplies a
full load current of 200 A at 440 volts
with a 0.6 lagging power factor, as
shown in the figure.

2. Example 2: Each phase of a wye-

connected 3Ø AC generator supplies a
100 A current at a phase voltage of
240V and a power factor of 0.9 lagging,
as shown in the figure.

3. Given a balanced three-phase system with Y-connected load for which line voltage is 230V and
impedance of each phase is 6+j8 ohms, find the line currents and power absorbed by each
phase.
4. Given a three-phase star connected AC generator, deduce the relationship between the phase
and line voltages. If the phase voltage of a three-phase star connected AC generator be 250V,
what will be the line voltages (a) when the phases are correctly connected and (b) when the
connection to one of the phases are reversed.
5. A three-phase system with line-to-line voltage of 400V supplies a balanced delta-connected load
taking a total power of 30kW at 0.8 p.f. lagging. Calculate (a) the impedance of each branch, and
(b) phase voltage.
6. Draw and explain the vector diagram for:
a. Line and Phase voltage of Balanced Star or Wye Connection
b. Line and Phase current of Balanced Delta Connection
