WORK INSTRUCTION

Hydrostatic pressure test on PE pipe/ fitting

WI-A04 Rev. 3

1. Scope
1.1. 2. To perform hydrostatic pressure test on PE pipe or fitting at the specified water temperature. Standards/ Code
2.1. 2.2. ISO 4427, ISO 4437, DIN 8075, BS EN 1519, DIN 19535

3. Test method standards: ISO 1167-1,2; DIN 8075, EN 921 (this standard is withdrawn). Equipments
3.1. 3.2. Required
3.3.
Pressure testing machine - manual machine or IPT Pipe
4. cutter, Measuring tape, End caps Temperature controlled
4.1. bath.

Sample Length
ISO 4427, ISO 4437, DIN8075 & BS EN 1519 - Free length three times the Outside diameter of pipe but not less than 250mm
4.2. plus end cap depth, up to 315 mm diameter, above 315 mm diameter 2 times outside diameter of pipe plus end cap length,
generally max 1000mm is used. In the case of fitting (fabricated or moulded type) the full length fitting is considered.

5. Conditioning
5.1. Condition the test samples at required test temperature ±1 0C.as per below conditioning time.

Wall thickness Min. time

(ISO 1167 & EN921)
W.T less than 3 mm 1 hour
W.T greater/equal to 3 mm less than 8 mm 3 hours
W.T greater/equal to 8 mm less than 16 mm 6 hours.
W.T greater/equal to 16 mm less than 32 mm 10 hours
W.T greater/equal to 32 mm 16 hours

6.2. Note down the pipe marking.

6.3. Chamfer the ends of the sample.
6.4. Ensure that the rubber ring of end cap is in good condition, replace if found bad.
6.5. Fix the metal end caps on the open sides of the sample piece.
6.6. Fill the sample with water.
6.7. Keep the air vent valve on the end cap open to remove the air from the sample.
6.8. Close the air vent valve and connect the sample to the pressuring machine.
6.9. Ensure there is no leakage in the sample by applying a pressure of 2 bars.
6.10. Place the sample into the appropriate tank (as per the temperature requirement).
6.11. Check and ensure that the tank temperature is appropriate.
6.12. Test pressure depends on the particular pipe standard and in case of fabricated fitting on the type of fitting. Please refer ISO
4427-3 for fabricated fitting.
6.13. After the conditioning period smoothly apply the required test pressure in the shortest time practicable between 30s and 1 h
depending upon the material, the size of the test piece and the capability of the pressurizing equipment. The required pressure
is calculated as per the below formula on the measured dimensions of the test piece,

2 x 10 x min wall thickness (mm) x hoop stress (MPa) Mean

Required test pressure (bars) =
OD (mm) - min Wall Thickness (mm)

6.14. Maintain the temperature of water in the tank within ± 1 C

6.15. Maintain the test pressure at +2/-1% during the required test period.
6.16. Pressurizing stops automatically once the test period is completed.
6.17. Remove the sample from the tank.
6.18. Check the sample visually for any failure.
6.19. A fracture in brittle mode is considered as a failure.

7. Pressure pipe (ISO 4427 & 4437; DIN 8074/75; )

7.1. The Hoop stress for the material is also mention in their respective standards or ITP
7.2. The table for hoop stress

Hoop stress (MPa)

Standard Material
20°C for 100 hrs 80°C for 165 hrs 80°C for 1000 hrs
ISO 4427 PE 100 12.4 5.4 5.0
PE 80 10.0 4.5 4.0
ISO 4437 PE 100 12.0 5.4 5.0
PE 80 9.0 4.5 4.0
DIN 8074/75 PE 100 12.0 5.4 5.0
PE 80 10.0 4.5 4.0

8.1. In this case the pressure applied shall be four times the FM rating of the pipe.
8.2. Maintain the pressure for 5 seconds.
8.3. Free length shall be taken as per ASTM D 1599 - five times the Outside diameter of pipe up to 150 mm Diameter but not less
than 300 mm plus end cap depth, Above 150 mm three times the out side diameter of pipe but in no case not less than 760 mm
plus end cap length.

9. Drainage pipe (EN 1519 -1)

9.1. In this case the pressure applied shall be calculated by using circumferential hoop stress 4.0 MPa, for 165 hrs at 80°C.
9.2. Please see ITP and Table 14 of EN 1519-1.

10. Conduits - Non Pressure & Drainage (DIN 19535 Part 1 &2)
10.1. In this case the pressure applied shall be calculated by using circumferential hoop stress 4.0 MPa, for 170 hrs at 80°C.
10.2. Please see respective ITP and DIN 19535.

11. Acceptance criteria

11.1. No leakage or rupture of pipe / fitting within the test period
11.2. If a failure occurs in the test piece at a distance of less than 0.1x free length from end cap, discard the result and repeat the test
using another test piece.

12. Safety Precautions

12.1. Wear protective clothing.
12.2. Wear eye protection while cutting the pipe.
