ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL DESCRIPTOR
LEVEL
0 The student does not reach a standard identified by any of the descriptors below. The
1-2 The student is able to:
i. select scientific knowledge
ii. select scientific knowledge and understanding to suggest solutions to problems set in familiar situations
iii. apply information to make judgments, with limited success.
3-4 The student is able to:
i. recall scientific knowledge
ii. apply scientific knowledge and understanding to suggest solutions to problems set in familiar situations
iii. apply information to make judgments.
5-6 The student is able to:
i. state scientific knowledge
ii. apply scientific knowledge and understanding to solve problems set in familiar situations
iii. apply information to make scientifically supported judgments.
7-8 The student is able to:
ii. explain scientific knowledge
ii. apply scientific knowledge and understanding to solve problems set in familiar and unfamiliar situations
iii. analyse and evaluate information to make scientifically supported judgments.

COMMAND TERMS:
ANALYZE: Identify the issue, Choose arguments, break down in order to bring out the essential elements or structure. To
identify parts and relationships, and to. interpret information to reach conclusions.
APPLY: Use knowledge and understanding in response to a given situation or real circumstances. Use an idea, equation,
principle, theory or law in relation to a given problem or issue.
COMPARE: Give an account of the similarities between two (or more) items or situations, referring to both (all) of them
throughout.
DISCUSS: Identify the issue, offer a considered and balanced review that includes a range of arguments, factors or
hypotheses. Opinions or conclusions should be presented clearly and supported by appropriate evidence.
EVALUATE: identify the issue, analyze the situation and make an appraisal by weighing up the strengths and limitations.
EXPLAIN: Give a detailed account including reasons or causes. (See also “Justify”.)
JUSTIFY: Give valid reasons or evidence to support an answer or conclusion.
OUTLINE:Give a brief account or summary.
SKETCH: Represent by means of a diagram or graph (labeled as appropriate). The sketch should give a
general idea of the required shape or relationship, and should include relevant features.

Take into account that all the questions of Biology assessments are formulated taking into account the IB
command terms, which, at the same time assess the necessary abilities you need to develop in natural
sciences. So it is important to answer the test’s questions by applying the command terms correctly.

GENETICS:

Genetics - Mendelian Experiments - Monohybrid and Dihybrid Crosses - Lesson 3 | Don't Me…

Incomplete Dominance, Codominance, Polygenic Traits, and Epistasis!

EVOLUTION:

Go to the formative assessments in google classroom and study all the resources there available.
Study with your quizzes and the scientific poster you had to present as a summative assessment.

Practice building cladograms and character matrixes.

Cladograms

Remember to study the difference between convergent and divergent evolution, and relate those
concepts to different evidence of evolution like comparing anatomy, fossil record, molecular
biology, among others.

Don’t forget practicing answering questions according to the command terms!
