“PRE-FINAL EXAMINATION”
PART I: MINUTE WRITING: Answer the following questions in the allotted time of an hour and
a half.
1. Please locate lines to support your answer and have a brief discussion as to why
that is your answer. Poems are Mi Primera Inspiracion, Our Mother Tongue, and
Sa Aking mga Kabata.
a.) General Idea of the Poem
Answer:
In his poem "Mi Primera Inspiracion," the main general idea revolves around
his mother. He created this poem in honor of his mother's birthday with an English
translation of "My First Inspiration," a tribute to his mother as his first teacher and
inspiration. Rizal's poem was purely poetic that it conveyed messages of eternal
love and appreciation for his mother's effort and unconditional love for him.

2. How did these economic changes affect the lives of Filipinos during the time?
The economic changes in the Philippines during the 19th Century
affected the lives of Filipinos both positively and negatively. There have been
several positive impacts on the country, particularly in the way of living of
Filipinos. The government has genuinely developed because it can afford
construction which gives job opportunities for the Filipinos that will provide them
with a source of income. It has given rise to technological interconnections that
make it easy to connect among the separated islands of the Philippines. The
Philippines' regional diversity has become interconnected by railroads,
steamships, advances in communication, and a growing educated Filipino
population because of public education in the Philippines that they may use as
a weapon for decolonization. Despite all of those developments, the Filipinos
suffered as well. The social hierarchy's classification into three levels: the
highest class, the middle class, and the lowest class, made way for the
changes affecting Filipinos' lives. Also, the justice system favors the wealthy
and powerful; there is no chance for those in the lowest class to defend
themselves. Filipinos became the Spaniards' slaves, where they paid taxes and
worked under the Spaniards' authority. Spaniards wielded enormous power
when rampant abuse of political power, fraud, and incompetence occurred.
There may be developments in the country and economic growth, but Filipinos

were still suffering under the Spaniards. Lastly, it was indeed an unfair world for
the Filipinos to experience abused and be treated poorly in their own country.
Thus, this made Filipinos suffer and unable to defend their rights brought by the
unwanted system of the oppressors.
3. The Spaniards also provided educational reforms, especially in higher education
in the country. Universities in the Philippines, such as the Ateneo and the
University of Santo Tomas, were required to provide secular courses to Filipinos.
How did education help in shaping the nationalistic consciousness of Filipinos
during that time?
The most significant reform during Spanish colonization was the
increase in educated people under the colonial government. Education was the
Filipinos' decolonization weapon. It opened Filipinos' eyes and gave them the
courage to fight for their rights as Filipinos. During Spanish colonization,
Filipinos were abused and mistreated; however, the number of educated people
has increased due to the government-provided public education in the
Philippines. It was a wake-up call for all Filipinos.
Over hundreds of years of colonial rule, first by Spain and subsequently
by the US, the martial law and the people's power revolution restored
democracy to the vast educational system have undergone significant change.
The evolution of the educational system has coincided with changes in the
national government. Today's emphasis is on increasing access and ensuring
that more Filipinos acquire a solid primary education to eliminate poverty and
boost national competitiveness. In this case, this proved that education helped
shape the nationalistic consciousness of Filipinos during that time by providing
quality education that everyone could access. Through learning, students can
obtain a wide array of knowledge that can help them better understand their
consciousness. According to the World Bank, similar measures have resulted in
"substantial economic advantages" in other nations. In 2016, the K-12 reform
announced that money had increased. It eased worries that the plan's
implementation would be hampered by a lack of finance and won over newly
elected President Rodrigo Duterte, who was initially opposed to it.
Despite these achievements and President Duterte's dedication to
making socioeconomic issues a priority in his policies, the school system still
faces significant inequities. Quality is still an issue. Lastly, it will take a
sustained commitment to increased education funding and a reliable method to
make sure the funds are as efficient as possible to address these issues.
4. Based on your assessment, how were these events in the 19 th Century crucial to
the formation of Rizal's love for his country?
In the 19th Century, the Philippines became one of the wealthiest nations of that
era. Rizal observed the numerous injustices experienced by his fellow Filipinos: they
were dependent on religious institutions or wealthy landowners for access to land for

farming or a means of subsistence; they were afraid to voice their complaints or to speak
out against the friars or the government; in other words, there was no true freedom of the
press or speech. In line with this, most Filipinos do not have the privilege of education
and its attendant benefits. Otherwise, it was only typical obscurantism if they had access
to education and help. Advancement of the colonialist policy negatively impacted the
situation by converting the Filipinos into ignorant, submissive people who were ashamed
of their proud heritage, which predated the arrival of the Spaniards.
For instance, due to its wealth in cash crops, the Philippines mostly controlled the
supply in world trade. As a result of this control, the Philippines had advanced
technology at the time due to its railroads, steamships, and sophisticated communication
systems. These served as a physical representation of Jose Rizal's national service
efforts. Without his talent, we are unable to become independent. He effectively
demonstrated the saying, "the pen is mightier than the sword." The writings of Rizal are
essential, and by studying his life, he decided to fight for his country using knowledge
and the power of language. Lastly, we should make ourselves more conscious of the
principles upon which our nation has built.
PART II: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Each group will select a famous individual in history. Then
write a biography of the said individual. Insert or omit at least ten facts about the individual
being written about. Identifying errors entails much cross-referencing of facts through different
legitimate sources. Avoid blogs and Wikipedia when searching the internet. Use reliable sources
of information.
A hero carries a lot of meanings, but how does a person get to be called a hero? A hero
shows great courage and is admired for achievement and noble qualities. A great example
would be our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Jose Rizal, also known as José Protasio Rizal
Mercado y Alonso Realonda, the pride of the Malayan race, was born on July 19, 1861, in
Calamba, Laguna. He was the seventh child of Francisco Mercado Rizal, an industrious
farmer who came from Binan, Laguna, while his mother, Teodora Alonzo y Quintos, was
born in Meisic, Sta. Cruz, Manila. They faced discrimination despite coming from wealthy
families because neither of their parents was born on the peninsula.
He served as an inspiration for the Philippine independence movement and was a
patriot, physician, master poet, and novelist. Rizal attended the universities of Manila and
Madrid for his education. At age 21, he went to Europe to finish his medical education at
the Universidad Central de Madrid, where he received a Licentiate in Medicine degree. Dr.
Jose Rizal pursued his ophthalmology training in Paris and Germany to help his mother,
whose eyesight was deteriorating. He excelled in medical school and promptly committed to
eradicating the Spanish colonial regime in the Philippines. This passionate author published
his first book, Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not/The Social Cancer, 1887), in Berlin. Noli
emphasized the adverse effects of Spanish rule in his native area and dedicated to the three
priest-martyrs named GomBurZa (Father Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora). He spent most of

his writing time in Europe between 1882 and 1892, where he worked at the University Eye
Hospital under Dr. Otto Becker.
Dr. Jose Rizal established his reputation as the leading spokesperson of the Philippine
reform movement through El Filibusterismo, a sequel to his first written novel. It demonstrates
that the indigenous people of the Philippines had a long history before the arrival of the
Spaniards. He also produced an annotated edition of Antonio Morga's Sucesos de las
Islas Filipinas in 1890. The political reform program of Rizal included the Philippines'
integration as a province of Spain, representation in the Cortes (the Spanish parliament),
the substitution of Filipino priests for Spanish friars, freedom of assembly and
expression, and legal parity between Filipinos and Spaniards or having equal rights like
Spanish citizens. However, after publishing his novels, he was exiled to Dapitan, and his
materials were confiscated. His exile in Dapitan was to end in exchange for a transfer to
Cuba as a military doctor. Spaniards permit Dr. Jose Rizal to enlist despite hesitation. A year
after his request was granted, in August 1896, Katipunan led a revolt after his request.
Andres Bonifacio, its leader, drew inspiration from the French. At the same time, Rizal was
charged and put in jail.
On December 26, 1896, a military court convicted Jose Rizal. It charged guilty with
insurrection, sedition, and conspiracy even though he opposed violence and urged in his
writings the peaceful overthrow of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. At 6 a.m. on
December 29, Capt. Rafael Dominguez announced Rizal's death sentence. His execution
was scheduled for the following day. On December 29, around 7:00 p.m., Rizal was
transferred to the death cell at Fort Santiago. In his last few hours, he wrote: "Mi Ultimo
Adios," which explains how magnificent the Philippines is and how Rizal wants us to
reflect on our history and understand how the rest of the world sees us. The 35-year-old
patriot was shot in the rear by a firing squad on December 30, 1896, in Luneta, Manila. He
paused, swung around to face his beheaders, and then collapsed onto his back to face the
Philippines sun.
After his death, Rizal ignited the Philippine nationalist movement. The country's first
president, General Emilio Aguinaldo, commanded the Philippine Revolutionary Army to formally
declared its independence on June 12, 1898. One might be referred to as a hero if one carries
out heroic deeds in our community or nation, as Jose Rizal did when he demonstrated that the
pen is mightier than the sword and repelled the Spaniards without resorting to force. Even
though Rizal's writing did not have an immediate impact, it had a far longer-lasting effect that
Filipinos today have continued to be felt.

PART III: GROUP JOURNAL: (EXACT 500 WORDS) Reflect on the importance of influencers
in an individual's life. Who are the most influential people in your life? How did they affect your
outlook on different aspects of your personal, academic, and even social life? Can a person live
without the influence of others?
Influencers play a significant role in a person's life. A person's mindset changes internally
as a result of influence. The most influential people affect other people's mindset as well as their
conduct. The emotional connection you develop with individuals is a critical component of
influence. Actual influence involves establishing relationships with others, earning their trust, and
persuading them to share your beliefs to benefit both parties in the long run. For us, the most
influential people in our lives are our parents. Both of our parents, like the majority of our
families, have excellent educations and lead successful lives both personally and professionally.
Both of them are successful nature people that is why we are very proud of them. We grew up in
a community where everyone was dedicated and diligent. It was a foundational childhood
because this is the root of what mindset we have right now. They cultivated in us the values of
success through integrity and honesty, the significance of heading to bed each night with a clear
conscience, and the truth that nothing can replace a commitment to hard work. Also, they
showed us how important it is to acknowledge your flaws and seek to correct them rather than
continue to remain in ignorance and arrogance. When it comes to our personal, academic, and
even social life, our parents have contributed a great influence on us. We can proudly say we
are who we are today because of them. They influence our personal life in which our parents
have a significant impact on how we act as well as how to behave. When we were still young,
our parents were the ones, we imitate because they are the elders in our home and we saw their
independency in every aspect. They have trained us to do the chores independently so today
we are grateful that we are well responsible for every task that is given to us. In our academic
life on the other hand, since they value education that much, they put an achiever mindset on us
when it comes to our studies, to become goal-oriented. And when it comes to our social life, we
gained a lot of knowledge about how we interact with other people. They taught us how to
respect other people just like how we respected our parents. Showing respect to other people
signifies how good your parents are when it comes to parenting. These are just some of the
aspects that our parents have influenced us. Without being influenced by someone or something
in life, it would be difficult to move through life and accomplish your goals since influence makes
things possible. It will play a significant role in your life as a person as well. Your level of well-
being is influenced by every element of your life. Influence is part of our life. That is why we
have a saying that says "no man is an island", no man can live alone for we can't survive on our
own.
