Activity ID and DI 1

The document discusses analyzing test items based on difficulty and discrimination indices. For the first test item, the difficulty index was 0.35 and discrimination index was positive 0.3, indicating moderate difficulty but that knowledge led to correct answers. The teacher should reteach poorly understood concepts and remove nonfunctional distractors. For the second item, difficulty was 0.46 but the discrimination index was negative -0.21, showing the item was ineffective and should be disregarded since upper-scoring students chose incorrectly more than lower-scoring students.

Activity: Answer the following questions:

1. A class is composed of 40 students. Divide the group into two. Option B is the correct
answer. Based from the given data on the table, as a teacher, what would you do with
the test item?

Compute the difficulty index

Total number of students who got the correct answer: 14
Total number of students who took the exam:40
Difficulty index: ?
Difficulty index= total no. of students who got the correct answer/total no. of students
=14/40
Difficulty index=0.35

Compute the discrimination index

Total no. of students in upper group: 20
Total no. of students who got the correct answer in upper group: 10
Total no. of students in lower group: 20
Total no. of students who got the correct answer in lower group: 4

UPPER GROUP= students who got the correct answer/ total no. of students in upper
group.
=10/20
=.5
LOWER GROUP= students who got the correct answer/ total no. of students in lower
group.
=4/20
=0.2
DISCRIMINATION INDEX= DIFFICULTY INDEX IN UPPER GROUP- DIFFICULTY INDEX IN
LOWER GROUP.
=0.5-0.2
DISCRIMINATION INDEX=0.3

Write your conclusions

Since the difficulty index is 0.35 in which if it is converted in percentage it will
give us a result of 35% of students who got the correct answer. I think the students had a
difficulty in taking the test. The teacher can maybe re teach the items that most of the students
got the answers wrong or she can change her approach so that he/she can meet the objective
that he/she wants to meet in a particular item. The discrimination index resulted positive so I
think that would indicate that knowledge resulted in correct answer. Teachers should remove
the distractors that are non-functional like shown from the table. Students only chooses
between A, B, C, E so it is obvious that no one considers letter D as a correct answer. Removing
the distractors that are non-functional will make the item/test reliable and valid.
2. A class is composed of 50 students. Use 27% to get the upper and lower groups. Analyze
the item given the following results. Option E is the correct answer. what will you do to
the test item?

Compute the difficulty index

Total number of students who got the correct answer: 13
27% of 50 in upper group:14
27% of 50 in upper group:14
Total no. of students: 28
Difficulty index: ?
Difficulty index= total no. of students who got the correct answer/total no. of students
=13/28
Difficulty index=0.46
Compute for the discrimination index
Total no. of students in upper group: 14
Total no. of students who got the correct answer in upper group: 5
Total no. of students in lower group: 14
Total no. of students who got the correct answer in lower group: 8

UPPER GROUP= students who got the correct answer/ total no. of students in
upper group.
=5/14
=0.36
LOWER GROUP= students who got the correct answer/ total no. of students in
lower group.
=8/14
=0.57
DISCRIMINATION INDEX= DIFFICULTY INDEX IN UPPER GROUP- DIFFICULTY INDEX
IN LOWER GROUP.
=0.36-0.57
DISCRIMINATION INDEX=-0.21
Write your conclusions
46% of students got the correct answer. I think the students had a moderate
difficulty in taking the test. The teacher can maybe re teach the item that most of the
students got the answers wrong or she can change her approach so that he/she can
meet the objective that he/she wants to meet in a particular item. The discrimination
index resulted -0.21 so I think we need to disregard the item since the discrimination
index is negative. Most of the students from upper group chose the incorrect option
than the lower group, this indicates that this item is not effective.
