Different types of greed (including its absence) are

at the heart of Doctor Fischer of Geneva or the

Bomb Party. Compare and contrast three types of
greed found in the novel and their consequences.

Is greed universal? Are we all ready to reject our moral values if offered the
right price? These are some of the provocative questions raised by Doctor
Fischer of Geneva or the Bomb Party by Graham Greene, a dark, postlapsarian
novel that explores the nature of greed and its different manifestations in a
world inhabited by fallible and corrupted human beings. However, although
material greed as well as greed for power and humiliation feature
predominately in the book, the text also suggests that redemption is possible
for those who seek to love rather than to hate.

1. Material greed (the toads): accept to be humiliated

2. Greed for power and humiliation (Dr Fischer): bottomless pit that leads
to suicide
3. Anna, Anna-Louise and Jones: No greed but love and therefore can
escape Dr Fischer
