dreams, and intentions.
TRAITS THAT DEFINE A PERSON:

• The human person possesses self-awareness.

SELF AWARENESS refers to the awareness of

oneself as an active participant in reality. A person is
aware not only of his or her surroundings or reality
but also of himself or herself as a participant in this
reality.

Self- awareness also enables a person to reach out to

other persons and establish meaningful relationships
with them.
TRAITS THAT DEFINE A PERSON:

2. The sense of self

It enables a person to look within himself or herself

and experience interiority.

INTERIORITY - refers to the quality of being focused

on one’s inner life and identity.
TRAITS THAT DEFINE A PERSON:

3. Self-determination

This refers to the awareness of one’s actions and

the notion that oneself is the source of an action.

It is brought about by the person’s free will or the

capability to act willfully and control one’s actions.

It also brings about the awareness of consequence-

that every action will have results or effects.
TRAITS THAT DEFINE A PERSON:

4. A human person has dignity

Each person has a worth and value that go beyond

quantifiable terms, indispensable and irreplaceable.

Human dignity is the basis for the recognition of our

human rights.

Doing good actions and upholding the good enable

the person to uphold his or her dignity.
TRAITS THAT DEFINE A PERSON:

5. A human person can reach out and interact with

others.

Man is a social being and a person has a natural

tendency to establish relationship with other people.

These interactions define our existence and enables

us to develop.
How are the body
and the spirit The human person is an embodied spirit.
related?

The body and spirit are integrated with

each other . They go hand -in-hand in
making us who we are.

Whatever affects the body also affects

the spirit, and this unique trait of the
person enables him or her to experience
both the physical world and the spiritual
world.
EMBODIED SPIRIT
It is an animating core living within each of
us.

It is known to be the driving force behind

what we actually think, do and say.

The usual and known connotation that comes

to our mind when we hear the word
“embodied” is always materialized or became
flesh (with physical form). Thus, when we say
“embodied spirit”, we normally believed and
conclude of a spirit becoming flesh.
EMBODIED SPIRIT
In the context and views of Christian philosophy,
the embodiment of the spirit
particularly refers to the inseparable union of
human body and soul.

Inseparable which also means the body and soul

work together at all times.

Hence, we can safely say that “embodied spirit” is

that the body is not separate from the soul, just as
the soul is not separate from the body
The Body as a Source of Limitation and Possibility
Human Limitations
As limitations, the body-related aspects about
ourselves are not products of our free choice.
• It has been given to us on a permanent basis. It
then comes as no surprise that the body is a source
of frustration to many.
• Some people are not happy with their age, sex or
filial relationships.
• Some people wish that they were born at adifferent
time, of a different sex, or of a different family.
Frustrations of this kind put thebody in a negative
light as if some form of imprisonment
• Many things that are related to our existence as
persons are related to our bodies
• that limit us in many ways. So we have to take care
of our bodies.
The Body as a Source of Limitation and Possibility
St. Thomas Aquinas, a philosopher and one of the greatest
theologian in the Catholic Church in the 13th century.
“Of all creatures, human beings have the unique power
to change themselves and things for the better.”

TRANSCENDENCE is the power is your ability to surpass

your limits. You are able to transcend your
limit through your physical and mental abilities.

It originated from the Latin prefix ”trans” meaning

“beyond” plus the term “scandare”
meaning “to climb;” hence, “beyond [what an individual
has] to climb (or to achieve or accomplish).”
