PERMUTATION
DISCUSSION
Definition of Permutation
Permutation refers to the arrangement of things in a definite order with no repetition
Linear Permutation
The number of permutations of n objects taken r at a time is gi ven by :
nPr = n! or P(n,r) = n!
(n-r)! (n-r)!
Where: n is the number of objects to be arranged
r is the number of objects taken at a time
Example 1.
In how many ways can six books be arranged on a shelf?
Solution: n = 6 r = 6 Since n = r
nPn = n!
6P6 = 6!
=6x5x4x3x2x1
= 720 ways
Example 2.
Suppose we have 8 different potted plants and we wish to arrange 4 of them in a row. In how many ways can this
be done?
Solution: n= 8 r = 4
nPr = n!
(n-r)!
8P4 = 8!
(8-4)!
8P4 = 8!
(4)!
8P4 = 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1
4x3x2x1
8P4 = 1680
Permutations With Repetitions
When some objects are alike, use the following rule to find the number of permutations of those objects. The
number of permutations of n objects of which r are alike and s are alike is found by evaluating the following
expression.
Pr = n!
r! s!...
where:
Pr = permutation with repetition
n = number of objects
r = number of repetitions
Example 1.
The letters in the word committee can be arranged in how many ways?
Solution: n = 9 r for letter m since letter m is repeated 2 times -- the value of r is 2
s for letter t since letter t is repeated 2 times -- the value of s is 2
t for letter e since letter e is repeated 2 times – the value of t is 2
Pr = n!
r! s! t!
Pr = 9!
2! 2! 2!
Pr = 45360 ways
Circular Permutations
If n objects are arranged in a circle, then there are (n-1)! Permutations of the n objects around the circle.
Pc = (n-1)!
Where:
Pc = circular permutation
n = number of objects
Example 1.
How many seating arrangements are possible for 5 people to be seated at a round table?
Solution: n = 5
Pc = (n-1)!
Pc = (5-1)!
Pc = 4!
Pc = 24
ASSESSMENT
Activity 1: Evaluate
1. 6P3 = ______________ 6. 8Pr = 6720
2. 7Pr = 840 7. 8P3 = ___________________
3. 5P5 = ______________ 8. nP4 = 3024
4. nP3 = 504 9. 12Pr = 1320
5. 9P5 = ______________ 10. 13Pr = 156
Activity 2: Problem Solving. Use extra sheet of paper for your solution.

2. Mrs. Bautista wants to assign 4 different tasks to her 4 students. How many possible ways can
she do it.
3. In how many different ways can 12 students occupy the 12 seats in a front row of a mini-
theater.
4. Find the number of different ways that the Garcia family of 6 can be seated around a circular
table with 6 chairs.
5. If there are 10 students and only 7 chairs are available, in how many ways can they be seated?
6. In a beauty pageant, there are 6 finalists. How many ways can 3 winners be selected?
7. Mr. Racraquin has 7 candles, each of different color. How many ways can he arrange the
candles in a candelabra that holds 3 candles?
8. Christian has 4 one-peso coins, 3 five-peso coins and 2 ten-peso coins. How many ways can he
arrange the coins in a row?
9. How many 6-digit numbers can be made using the digits from 944,394?
10.There are 3 identical green flags, 3 identical white flags and 2 identical red flags. Using all 8
flags, how many signals can be given?
