AS Math 10 Q3 Week 1 2

1. The document discusses permutations, which refer to arrangements of objects in a definite order without repetition. It provides formulas to calculate linear permutations, permutations with repetitions, and circular permutations. 2. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating linear permutations of arranging books on a shelf and plants in a row. Permutations with repetitions is explained using arranging the letters in "committee". 3. An activity with 15 problems tests understanding of calculating different permutation scenarios like assigning tasks, seating arrangements, and arranging coins and books.

PERMUTATION
DISCUSSION
Definition of Permutation
Permutation refers to the arrangement of things in a definite order with no repetition
Linear Permutation
The number of permutations of n objects taken r at a time is gi ven by :
nPr = n! or P(n,r) = n!
(n-r)! (n-r)!
Where: n is the number of objects to be arranged
r is the number of objects taken at a time
Example 1.
In how many ways can six books be arranged on a shelf?
Solution: n = 6 r = 6 Since n = r
nPn = n!
6P6 = 6!
=6x5x4x3x2x1
= 720 ways
Example 2.
Suppose we have 8 different potted plants and we wish to arrange 4 of them in a row. In how many ways can this
be done?
Solution: n= 8 r = 4
nPr = n!
(n-r)!
8P4 = 8!
(8-4)!
8P4 = 8!
(4)!
8P4 = 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1
4x3x2x1
8P4 = 1680
Permutations With Repetitions
When some objects are alike, use the following rule to find the number of permutations of those objects. The
number of permutations of n objects of which r are alike and s are alike is found by evaluating the following
expression.
Pr = n!
r! s!...
where:
Pr = permutation with repetition
n = number of objects
r = number of repetitions

Example 1.
The letters in the word committee can be arranged in how many ways?
Solution: n = 9 r for letter m since letter m is repeated 2 times -- the value of r is 2
s for letter t since letter t is repeated 2 times -- the value of s is 2
t for letter e since letter e is repeated 2 times – the value of t is 2
Pr = n!
r! s! t!
Pr = 9!
2! 2! 2!
Pr = 45360 ways
Circular Permutations
If n objects are arranged in a circle, then there are (n-1)! Permutations of the n objects around the circle.
Pc = (n-1)!
Where:
Pc = circular permutation
n = number of objects
Example 1.
How many seating arrangements are possible for 5 people to be seated at a round table?
Solution: n = 5
Pc = (n-1)!
Pc = (5-1)!
Pc = 4!
Pc = 24
