Determining Planck's Constant - Separation of Wavelengths With A Straight-View Prism On The Optical Bench

This document describes an experiment to determine Planck's constant using an optical bench, straight-view prism, photocell, and various other components. Light from a mercury lamp is dispersed by the prism into separate wavelengths, and each wavelength is measured as it falls on the photocell. The photocell generates a current that charges a capacitor, and Planck's constant can be calculated based on measurements of the opposing voltage and anode current. The document also lists all the specific equipment required to perform the experiment.

DESCRIPTION
The experiment P6.1.4.2 uses an open arrangement on the optical bench. The
wavelengths of the light are dispersed using a direct-vision prism. The light of
precisely one spectral line at a time falls on the cathode. A capacitor is connected
between the cathode and the anode of the photocell which is charged by the anode

amplifier.
Note: The opposing voltage U can alternatively be tapped from a DC voltage source.
