USES OF COMPUTER

1. A computer helps you to type a text or document.

2. A computer helps you to listen to music.

3. A computer helps you to use the internet.

4. A computer helps you to send e-mail.

5. A computer is used for playing games.

6. A computer helps you to draw a picture.

7. A computer is used for seeing movies and watching educational films.


 
8. A computer helps you to chat with a friend.

9. A computer helps to store information.

10. It can be used for teaching and learning at home, in school and other places.

Use of Computers: Playing Games


There are several games that can be played on a computer system. Examples are:
i. Mario
ii. Bridge
iii. Scorer
iv. Car race
v. Candy crush, etc.

Assignment
1. Which five places can the computer be used?
2. List 10 other computer games that you know and learn how to play at least 2 of them.

TYPING OF TEXTS
Typing texts is one of the uses of the computer. We shall be typing some simple sentences.

For example –
My name is Mrs. Tolulope Idowu. I am 48 years old. I live in Lagos.

WATCHING EDUCATIONAL FILMS – SPELLING BEE


The computer can also be used for watching educational films. We shall be watching two short clips today.
- The first one is a story: The ant and the dove
- The second is a spelling bee. You will need a sheet of paper to write the words you will hear.

STORING INFORMATION
Information not saved on the computer cannot be retrieved (gotten again). It is very important to save the
texts that you have typed on the computer.

The Use of Computer in Schools.

The computer is used in schools for the following:


1. To do homework and assignment
2. To make drawings
3. For teaching and learning
4. For tests and examination
5. For keeping and preparing pupil’s report

Use of Computer in Hospitals


The computer can be used in the hospital for many things.

In the hospital, the computer is used for:


1. Scanning
2. X-ray
3. Treatment
4. Keeping medical records

Use of Computer in Banks


The computer is used in banks for;
1. receiving money
2. for sending money
3. for buying airtime, data, etc.
4. for making online payments
5. for keeping receipts and payments
6. for keeping bank’s official records

Use of Computer in Supermarkets


Computer is used at supermarkets for:
1. making payments
2. printing receipts
3. checking the list of prices
4. keeping records of goods sold
5. keeping record of purchases
6. keeping record of available goods

POS system - Point of Sale system is used for transactions. It helps customers to pay for goods and services.

ATM – Automated Teller Machine, a cash dispenser. It helps to take cash out of your bank account. You
can also use it to deposit cash and print out statements.

MEANING AND EXAMPLES OF IT DEVICES


IT is the abbreviation for Information technology. It is gotten from the word ICT which means Information
Communication technology.

The devices that are used in the ICT world are known as IT devices.

Examples of IT devices are:


1. Calculator
2. Mobile phone
3. Organizer
4. Television
5. Radio
6. Laptop, etc

GSM and Smartphones


GSM is an acronym for Global System for Mobile Communication. It is an IT device and has various types
such as: android phones and table phones.

A smartphone is a developed type of mobile phone that has more functions than GSM and other basic
functions of a computer.

Smartphones are used for:-


i. making and receiving calls
ii. sending and receiving messages
iii. playing music and watching movies
iv. registering contacts
v. sending and receiving emails and texts
vi. creating photos and videos, etc.

1. List five other IT devices.
2. List five other uses of smartphones.
Uses of Organizer

An organizer is an
electronic device that store information like names, addresses, phone numbers, dates and time of meetings.

Smartphone has an inbuilt organizer. Organizer can be used for –


1. Organizing information
2. Setting reminder
3. Storing or keeping information for future use
4. Organizing meetings and appointments
5. Setting goals and tracking achievement of goals.
6. Memos and notes.

Uses of Fax Machines

A fax machine is a device that is used to send and receive printed documents or images. It can be done
electronically over a telephone network.
It is used for:
1. Sending and receiving of printed documents or images

Parts of Common ICT Devices


Parts of common ICT devices are the screen and keypad.

Uses of Screen
The screen is a visual part of common devices that:
1. Displays information in pictorial form,
2. Make it possible to operate in-built keypad.

Uses of Keypad
The keypad is a part of common ICT devices that contain numbers (0-9), letters (A-Z) and special
characters.
Keypad enables users to:
1. Dial a number
2. Receive a phone call.
3. Send messages
4. Store information with specific characters.

INPUT DEVICES
Remember that the computer system is an electronic device that is made up of hardware and software
components that are capable of accepting data, process it and give useful information.

Three basic parts of the hard ware components are:


1. Input devices,
2. Output devise, and
3. System unit

Input devices are parts of the computer used to


send data (information) and commands
into computer system, e.g. keyboard, mouse,
etc. They are used for telling the computer
what we want it to do.

Examples of Input Devices are:


1. Keyboard
2. Mouse
3. Microphone
4. Webcam
5. CD/DVD- ROM, etc.

Input Device: Keyboard


A key board is an input device which is used to input data into the computer system. It remains the most
vital interface device between the user and the computer. It is the most common input device for entering
data into the computer. It is also an electronic device with several groups of keys electronically linked to
the processor when attached to the computer.

A keyboard is made of buttons that create letters (jhtYHJ), numbers (0754) and symbols (?;@#$) as well
as other functions.

There are two main types of keyboard:


1. Standard keyboard
2. Enhanced keyboard

PowerPoint is a presentation program developed by Microsoft.

How to create a presentation


Open PowerPoint
In the left pane, select New
Select an option:
 To create a presentation from scratch, select blank presentation
 To use a prepared design, select one of the templates
 To see tips for using PowerPoint, select Take a Tour, and then select Create.

Add Slide
1. In the thumbnails on the left pane, select the slide you want your new slide to follow.
2. In the Home tab, in the Slides section, select New Slide.
3. In the Slides section, select Layout, and then select the layout you want from the menu.

Add and Format Text


1. Place the cursor inside a text box, and then type something

My name is AyanfeOluwa. I come from a well reputed family of Lagos. I am studying in Primary 4.
My parents are teachers. We are two in the family, my sister and I. My younger sister is in Primary 1.
I love my parents because I learned a lot from them. When I grow up, I want to be like my parents.

2. Select the text, and then select one or more options from the Font section of the Home tab, such as
Font, Increase Font Size, Decrease Font Size, Bold, Italics, Underline, etc.

3. To create bulleted or numbered lists, select the text, and then select Bullets or Numbering.

Saving
1. On The File tab, select Save
OR
2. Under Save As > Recent Folders, select Browse, pick a path and file folder and then name the file.
3. Select Save.
