Chapter 8 SET 1 Q

The document summarizes several word problems involving constraints and optimization. Problem 1 involves calculating weights of fertilizer and weedkiller in lawn treatment bags and finding the maximum number of bags that can be produced. Problem 2 involves constraints on employing foreign and local workers and finding the maximum wages. Problem 3 involves constraints on producing different glassware items to maximize profit.

Chapter 8 – Revision 1

1. The owner of a small nursery makes two types of lawn treatment. Type A contains (by
weight) two parts of fertiliser to one part of weedkiller and Type B contains one part of
fertiliser to three parts of weedkiller. He sells both types in one-kilogram bags.
a. Calculate the weights of both the fertiliser and weedkiller in Type A and Type B
bags. [2 marks]

FERTILISER WEEDKILLER

TYPE A

TYPE B

b. The owner of the nursery has 30 kg of fertiliser and 30 kg of weedkiller available

from which to make x bags of Type A and y bags of Type B lawn treatments.

i. Write two inequalities involving x and y, other than x ≥ 0 and y ≥ 0 . [2

marks]
ii. Draw the two inequalities from (b) (i) on the graph and shade the feasible region. [3
marks]

c. The fertiliser costs the nursery $3.60 per kg and the weedkiller costs $2.40 per kg.
Both types of lawn treatment are sold at $6.00 per bag. How much profit is made
on a bag of each type? [3 marks]
d. If all Type A and Type B lawn treatments produced can be sold, how many bags of
each should be made up to ensure maximum profit? [3 marks]
2. A fast food restaurant employs p foreign workers and q local workers subject to the
following constraints:
I The number of local workers employed exceeds the number of foreign workers
employed by at most 60.
II The number of local workers employed must be at least three-fifths of the number of
foreign workers employed.
III The maximum total number of workers employed is 160.
a) State five inequalities that satisfy the given constraints. [5 marks]

b) Draw a graph of q on p that represents all the constraints in (a). Shade the feasible
region of interest, ROI that satisfy all the constraints. Label your graph and corner
points clearly. [5 marks]
c) Find all the possible corner points of the graph. [2 marks]

d) Find the maximum number of foreign workers that can be employed. [1 mark]

e) Find the maximum number of local workers that can be employed. [1 mark]

The daily wages of a foreign worker and a local worker are RM15 and RM30
respectively.
f) Develop an objective function to find the daily wages. [1 mark]

g) Find the maximum cost of employing the workers and state the respective number
of foreign workers and local workers. [5 marks]
3. Sklo, a glass and crystal ware company, is about to launch a new line of products
called Spring Blooms. All products in this line (cake platters, cheese platters and fruit
bowls) feature the same flower design. The company plans to produce a trial batch of
2100 items. Based on previous experience, they know that the number of cake
platters should be at least double the number of cheese platters and that the demand
for fruit bowls will not exceed 600. They also need to produce at least 200 cheese
platters and no more than 1600 cake platters.
a. Let x be the number cake platters and let y be the number of cheese platters
produced. Write the seven constraints to represent the information.

b. Graph the constraints on a set of axes.

c. Shade the feasible region and label it clearly.
d. Find the coordinates of the corner points of the feasible region.

Assuming that every item produced will be sold; the company can make a profit of
$24 on every cake platter, $18 on every cheese placer and $21.50 on every fruit bowl
sold.
e. If the Sklo Company wishes to maximise their profit, write the objective function.

f. Find the quantities of each type of merchandise that need to be produced and sold
in order to maximise the profit.

g. State the maximum profit.
