Class Notes Metaphors

A metaphor is a figure of speech that indirectly compares two unlike things that share some common attribute or characteristic. Unlike a simile that uses "like" or "as", a metaphor states something "is" something else. Metaphors use "is", "was", "were", or "are" to make the comparison between the two things. Several examples are given that use metaphors to describe things in non-literal ways.
