Mid Sem Questions

This document contains three problems related to satellite orbits and communication. Problem 1 involves calculating look angles for an earth station and satellite, and estimating velocity increments to transfer between parking and geosynchronous orbits. Problem 2 involves deriving the relationship between true anomaly and eccentric anomaly for an elliptical orbit, and calculating time to travel between two positions in an elliptical orbit. Problem 3 involves calculating the noise power density of a receiver given its noise figure and temperature, and estimating effective isotropic radiated power for a downlink given transmit power, frequency, and antenna aperture.

1. (A) An earth station is located at (33.7758 o, -84.39738o).

A geostationary earth orbit satellite is

hovering synchronous with a sidereal day and its sub-satellite point is at -105 o. Calculate the
look angles. Assume radius of earth to be 6378 km.
(B) Estimate the incremental velocity required to place a satellite in geosynchronous transfer
orbit from the parking orbit at a height of 200 km. Also estimate the incremental velocity
required to go from GTO to GSO. Assume zero orbital inclinations.

2. (A) Obtain a relation between true anomaly and eccentric anomaly. How is the mean anomaly
related with true anomaly for a circular orbit?
(B) A satellite is moving in an orbit which has an eccentricity of 0.1 and a semi-major axis of
7500 km. Estimate the time it takes to move from the first position defined at 30 o past perigee
to the second position defined at 90o past perigee.

3. (A) A receiver which is kept at a room temperature of 290 K has a noise figure of 4 dB. Estimate
the noise power density of the receiver in dBW/Hz. Take Boltzmann’s constant = 1.38 × 10-23
Joules/Kelvin.
(B) Estimate the EIRP (in dBW) of a downlink which operates at 4 GHz and a transmit power of
10 Watts, given that the antenna has an effective aperture of 10 m 2.
