Underwater Navigation System

Underwater navigation systems use sound and GPS to help navigate underwater. They are necessary for safety when working underwater where it is easy to get lost. Navigation systems use devices that transmit signals and receivers that triangulate the position based on the signals. Challenges include temperature differences affecting sound speed and battery life, but navigation systems have improved performance in difficult environments and now see widespread use.

UNDERWATER NAVIGATION
SYSTEM

Underwater navigation system is something that is

mandatory for all that, that travels under the water.
As we know,
Underwater navigation means the tracking of
underwater vehicles or drivers by means of distance
(or) by directional measurements.

Why is underwater navigation system

necessary??
It is necessary because people (or) people who work
under water need a proper navigation so that they
will be able to reach the shore (or) a particular area
without any confusion...Just think the person who lost
his/her way while doing something underwater,it is
really scary....right? So, navigation system is very
crucial for those.
Navigation system is also known as GPS system.
How the GPS works?
Underwater GPS (UGPS) is a tracking device.
Operating principle:
Between the compact antenna (or) seperate cabled
receivers we can use anyone for receiving baseline.
Antenna is very quick and easy while the separate
receivers are quite hard but both of these supports
full 300 meter range.

 Locator:
A locator is something that helps to transmit the
signal which are then picked up by the receivers

 Baseline:
The antenna (or) the separate receiver picks up the
signal from the locator.

 Topside:
The topside positioning computer uses many
different rules to triangulate and to calculate the
position of the locator based on the picked up
signals from the antenna (or) the receivers.

How is sound used to navigate underwater?

Underwater sound can be used to help ships
navigate their way through the water. A normal
underwater navigation system uses the hydrophone
and a tracking beacon.
The hydrophone is attached to the boat , below the
water and works just like the antenna.
The uses of beacon can be seen in many ways.
Beacons that make a pinging sound are spread out
on the ocean floor in known locations so that it
becomes really easy to find the route. Computers
then calculate the exact position of the ship or ROV
by determining the distance from the beacons and
using simple geometry and basic math.

How position of the system is calculated?

Underwater positioning is based on the basic

principle:
Distance = Speed x Time, where Speed is the
speed of sound in water.

Factors affecting underwater navigation:

Many things affect the underwater navigation
system. The speed changes with the temperature,
so this must be measured in different areas and
different times of the day. Difference in water
temperature may result in thermoclines(regions of
the water column that separate warm surface water
from cold deep water). These thermoclines may
deflect the sound.

Features of GPS system :

All the underwater GPS system are supplied with a

pre-loaded GUI (Graphical User Interface). It runs on
the topside unit and is operated through a standard
web browser.

Features :

 Drag and drop method

 Map view with proper functioning
 Live update
 Interest in the points
 Grid view with proper functioning
 Tools
 OS independent

Performance :

The use of the UGPS is really helpfula nad

appreciated a lot because it helps to maintain a
proper balance and helps as it helps in the most
challenging situations.

UGPS excels where traditional positioning systems

stop working. They are now produced in a large
amount as it’s value went up. Now it’s very necessary
to because it helps the underwater (or) the vehicles
that used to travel in water.

The amazing performance comes to display

especially when the environment is challenging:

 Shallow water
 Inside tanks or pools
 Close to ship hulls
 Inside fully populated fish farming cages
 Inside subsea templates

Hungry for the power :

It’s nearly impossible to escape GPS’ grasp on

modern life. The technology, which relies on
satellite-transmitted radio signals, is used in
shipping, navigation, targeted advertising, and more.
“Sound is power-hungry,” says Adib. For tracking
devices that produce acoustic signals, “their batteries
can drain very quickly.” So, the team sought a
battery-free way to use sound.

Thus, we all need UGPS system all over the country

around the world so that the economic and the
development of the country will grow fast and will
unite together....

“I realise that I’m powerless to resist him.

There is nothing I can do; this man has a
GPS navigation system that takes him
Straight to the center of my heart”
