Q3)
The initial population of a particular fish species was approximately 600. The population grows at a
rate of 12% per week.
a) Calculate the growth factor of the population of fish species. [A-1]
b) Determine a function f(x) which models the population growth of the fish species. [A-2,C-1]
c) Estimate the number of fishes in the colony after 15 weeks. [A-1]
d) Assume that the function f(x) is translated horizontally to the right by 2 units and vertically up by 4
units. Find the equation of the transformed function g(x) by showing necessary rules and working.
[C - 2, A – 2]

Q4) Credit card machine readers check the validity of the credit card number using a special set of
steps called the Luhn's algorithm. The images given below shows the flowchart of the algorithm and
how the algorithm works for a credit card.

Credit Card Number

Double every second digit starting

with the first digit from the left Step1

If the doubled digit results in a 2-digit number,

Step2
then add the two digits together to get the result

Add all the digits together to find

the total

NO
Final total
divisible by NOT a valid credit
10? card number

YES

A valid credit card

number
3
(a) Determine the missing digits represented by the letters A,B,C,D and E. [B - 2]
(b) Justify why the credit card is invalid. [B - 2]
(c) Given the credit card 415008111727967X. Apply Luhn’s algorithm and determine the value of X
for which this card is valid. Use may use the table given for the working. [B - 4]

Q5)
In a soccer stadium, the first row has 610 seats. The second row has 620 seats, the third
has 630 seats, and so on. The stadium sells seats from the middle of a row outwards. Each row
must be completely sold before they sell tickets for the next row.

(a) Predict the number of seats in the fourth and the fifth row. [B – 2]
(b) Describe, in words, the pattern that you identify in the number of seats in each row. [B – 2]
(c) Derive the general rule for the number of seats in row ‘n’. [B – 2; C - 1]
(d) Find the number of seats that can be sold if [B – 3]
(i) Only the front two rows are used.
(ii) Only the front three rows are used.
(iii) Only the front four rows are used.
(e) Derive a formula for the total number of seats that can be sold if the front n rows are used. [B –
3; C - 1]
(f) Hence, find the total number of seats can be sold if the front 30 rows are used. [B – 2]
(g) Find the number of rows needed for the first 10,000 tickets. [B – 3; C - 1]

Q6) The height, h(t), in centimetres, of a bicycle pedal above the ground at time ‘t’ seconds can be
modelled with a graph as shown below.

(a) Write down the maximum height of the pedal above the ground. [D – 1]
(b) Write down the minimum height of the pedal above the ground. [D – 1]
(c) Determine the function that models this graph. [D – 4]
(d) Calculate the first value of ‘t’ for which the height of the pedal above the ground is 30 cm.
[D – 3]
(e) Calculate the number of times the pedal rotates in one minute. [D – 2]

Q7) James spends some of his time outside school hours playing basketball. He also does a part-
time job to earn his pocket money. ‘x’ represents the number of hours he spends playing basketball
each week and ‘y’ represents the number of hours he spends at the part-time job each week.

The amount of time spent playing and working part-time (shown by lines green L1, red L2, blue L3
and purple L4), is denoted by R.

a) Identify the shaded region ‘R’ by completing the inequalities below.
State the constraints in words in the space provided. [D – 5; C - 3]

b) James’ income per week by playing and working part-time is given by the formula
I = 3.50x + 5y dollars. Interpret the meaning of the coefficients of x and y. [C - 2]

c) How much time must be spent on each activity during a week in order to maximise James’
weekly income? Justify your answer. [D - 2]

d) What is his maximum income? [D - 1]
