Paragraph 1: Plastic surgery can be helpful for correcting birth defects in children. An
organization called Operation Smile provides reconstructive plastic surgery to poor
children all over the world. Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal parts of
the body caused by birth defects, developmental abnormalities, injury, infection,
tumors, or disease. The surgery is generally performed to improve function but may
also be done to give a child a normal appearance.
Paragraph 2: Operation Smile provides children born with cleft lips, cleft palates, and
other facial deformities with free reconstructive surgeries. Doctors and nurses from
around the world volunteer their time for two weeks on a medical mission. During a
typical international medical mission, 300-500 children receive full medical
assessments, and 100-150 children are surgically treated.
Paragraph 3: This organization was founded in 1982 by Dr. William Magee Jr., an
American plastic surgeon, and his wife, Kathleen Magee, a nurse and clinical social
worker. The couple traveled to the Philippines with a group of medical volunteers to
repair children’s cleft lips and cleft palates. The Magees saw the need, and Operation
Smile was born. The goal of the charity is to improve the lives of children by improving
their appearance, building up their self-esteem, and restoring their dignity.
Paragraph 4: Since 1982, more than 120,000 children and young adults with facial
deformities have been treated by thousands of volunteers worldwide. In addition,
thousands of medical professionals have been trained globally. Operation Smile
currently has a presence in fifty countries and has nearly 4,000 credentialed medical
volunteers ready to donate their time and talent.

READING PASSAGE 2
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions below.
Paragraph 1: When is cleaning walls a crime? When you’re doing it to create art,
obviously. A number of street artists around the world have started expressing
themselves through a practice known as reverse graffiti. Inspired by the ‘clean me’
messages that you see written on the back of some trucks, they find dirty surfaces and
inscribe them with images or messages using cleaning brushes or pressure hoses. Either
way, it’s the same principle: the image is made by cleaning away the dirt.
Paragraph 2: Each artist has their own individual style but all artists share a common
aim: to draw attention to the pollution in our cities. The UK’s Paul Curtis, better known
as Moose, operates around Leeds and London and has been commissioned by a
number of companies to make reverse graffiti advertisements.
Paragraph 3: Brazilian artist, Alexandre Orion, turned one of São Paulo’s transport
tunnels into an amazing mural in 2006 by scraping away the dirt. Made up of a series of
white skulls, the mural reminds drivers of the effect their pollution is having on the
planet. ‘Every motorist sits in the comfort of their car, but they don’t give any
consideration to the price their comfort has for the environment and consequently for
themselves,’ says Orion.
Paragraph 4: The anti-pollution message of the reverse graffiti artists confuses city
authorities since the main argument against graffiti is that it spoils the appearance of
both types of property: public and private. This was what Leeds City Council said about
Moose’s work: ‘Leeds residents want to live in clean and attractive neighbourhoods.
We view this kind of advertising as environmental damage and will take strong action
against any advertisers carrying out such campaigns.’ It seems that no action was taken
against the advertisers – no fines nor any other punishment – but Moose himself was
ordered to ‘clean up his act’. How was he supposed to do this: by making all property
he had cleaned dirty again?
Paragraph 5: As for the Brazilian artist’s work, the authorities were annoyed but could
find nothing to charge him with. They had no other option but to clean the tunnel – but
only the parts Alexandre had already cleaned. The artist merely continued his campaign
on the other side. The city officials then decided to take drastic action. They not only
cleaned the whole tunnel but also every tunnel in São Paulo.
2. Which of the following best describes the writing style of the text? (D)
A. comparative and explanatory
B. descriptive and comparative
C. persuasive and descriptive
D. narrative and explanatory
3. Why does the author pose this question in the reading, ‘How was he supposed to do
this: by making all property he had cleaned dirty again?’ in paragraph 4? (B)
A. to emphasize the difficulty faced by Moose when he was requested to clean up his
work
B. to point out the irony of the request that Moose clean up his work
C. to ask the reader to think about a solution for Moose
D. to question the legal basis of the request for Moose
4. Which of the following is true about the action of Leeds City Council against Moose’s
graffiti? (B)
A. They fined the advertisers.
B. They requested the artist to remove his work.
C. They asked the advertisers to take drastic action.
D. They explained why his graffiti is not legally acceptable.
5. Which of the following is NOT true about the authorities in São Paulo. (A)
A. They found the legislation to charge Orion’s action.
B. They tried to remove all the graffiti done by Orion.
C. They were frustrated by Orion’s works.
D. They did not support Orion’s works.
QUESTIONS 6-10. Choose ONE WORD from the passage for each blank.
6. Regardless of the differences in (style), all graffiti artists work toward the same goal
of making the public think about pollution in their city.
7. (Skulls) are the main image on the graffiti created by Alexandre Orion in Brazil
streets.
8. While driving their cars, motorists do not think much about the (price) the
environment and humans have to pay.
9. City authorities are against graffiti because such work (spoils) both public and private
properties in terms of how they look.
10. When the Brazilian artist did not stop doing graffiti, the measure taken by São
Paulo’s authorities was (drastic).
READING PASSAGE 1
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions below.
Paragraph 3: On the other hand, security can be improved by using face scanners in
public places. For example, at a large sporting event, cameras can be used to monitor
the crowds, secretly capturing images of individuals. These images can then be
compared to photos of known terrorists. If a match comes up, the terrorist can be
located and removed from the premises before he or she can do any harm.
Paragraph 4: One problem with this idea is that the accuracy of face scanners
DISMINISHES when they are tracking people in large crowds. Because the people aren’t
posing, the angle may be off. This increases the chances of false positives, putting
people’s rights in jeopardy.
QUESTIONS 1 – 3:
Write the best answer (A, B, C or D) in the box provided for each of the following
questions:
1. What does the phrase “These things” in paragraph 1 refer to? (B)
A. Biometric technology and the process of measurement
B. Facial proportions and facial characteristics
C. Biometric technology and facial proportions
D. Facial characteristics and the process of measurement

Paragraph 1: I’ve spent ten years photographing sinkholes and heard all sorts of
explanations – some plausible, some just wild – as to why they occur. [Check out my
previous blogs via the link below.] So when I saw these dramatic pictures on the news
of a new sinkhole in Guatemala City, I decided to head down there to look for myself
rather than take anyone else’s word for it.
Paragraph 2: It’s quite a scary sight. The hole, which is 18 meters wide and is estimated
to be 100 meters deep, looks like someone has taken an enormous drill and drilled
down into the earth. It’s not the first time this has happened here. In 2007, a similar
sinkhole appeared in a residential district of Guatemala City and was reported to have
swallowed about a dozen homes.
Paragraph 3: It is known that most sinkholes are caused by a build-up of water in the
soil over a natural cavity in limestone rock. The saturated soil's weight causes the
cavity's roof to collapse and all the earth above with it. But in this case, there’s no
limestone bedrock. In fact, there’s no solid rock underneath at all. The city is built on
rather loose volcanic debris. What is believed to have happened here is that water
leaked from the sewer system and caused the ground under the foundations of
buildings to become hollowed out. Then at a certain point the ground just collapsed in
this extraordinary pipe shape.
Paragraph 4: So strictly speaking, this isn’t a real sinkhole. It’s a different phenomenon
that no one has a name for yet. Whatever you call it, the effect is both amazing and
frightening. One local official said that it had happened after a freak tropical storm
caused overload on the water system and that it is not expected to happen again. Local
residents seemed less sure. One told me she wasn’t waiting to find out. ‘My family and I
are getting out of here as soon as we can!’
Other sinkholes like this are known to exist and I’d be very interested to hear from any
readers if you’ve seen anything similar.
2. Why did the writer go to see new sinkhole in Guatemala City? (A)
A. He wanted to see it with his own eyes.
B. He did not trust the words from other people
C. He wanted to photograph it.
D. He wanted to write about it.
4. What can be inferred from the passage about the new sinkhole in Guatemala? (D)
A. It had natural causes.
B. A limestone bedrock was found at the site of the sinkhole.
C. The ground collapsed because the volcanic debris became loose.
D. It is likely to be rooted in a man-made problem.
5. Which of the following best describes the writing style of the text? (B)
A. comparative and explanatory
B. descriptive and explanatory
C. persuasive and descriptive
D. narrative and explanatory
QUESTIONS 6-10.
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the reading text?
Write
T if the statement agrees with the information
F if the statement contradicts the information
NG if there is no information on this
READING PASSAGE 1
Paragraph 1: Parents often face a difficult time prying children away from video screens
and getting them outdoors for some good old-fashioned exercise. Today, they might not
have to. Exergaming, a combination of video games and physical movement, is becoming
a hot fitness trend all
over the world.
Paragraph 2: Exergaming was popularized in recent years by the Nintendo Wii. This game
system allows players virtual participation in sports like baseball, tennis, and bowling. But
the roots of exergaming extend into the 1980s. The first exergaming device,
Computrainer, led stationary bike riders on a trip through a virtual landscape. Similar
“virtual reality” systems followed, but they proved too expensive and complicated for the
average person.
Paragraph 3: In 1998, Konami’s fun and affordable “Dance Dance Revolution” brought
exergaming into the mainstream. Players stand on a platform and tap colored arrows with
their feet in tune to musical and video cues.
Paragraph 4: Today, fitness clubs, schools, and community centers throughout America
offer exergaming machines. Some schools even substitute exergaming workouts for
traditional PE classes. Though parents are happy to see their children exercising, many
still worry. “Exergames burn calories, raise heartbeats, and offer a physical benefit for
kids,” said Lisa Hanson, co-director of a Florida research laboratory. But she added that it
is unclear whether active gaming offers the same benefits as traditional workouts. A
British study found that many Wii games, for example, don’t provide intense enough
exercise.
QUESTIONS 1 – 4:
Write the best answer (A, B, C or D) in the box provided for each of the following
questions:
According to paragraph 3, what was the reason why Dance Dance Revolution was widely
known in 1998? (C)
It allowed players to tap colored arrows with their feet.
It was not expensive and complicated.
Players derive enjoyment from it with a reasonable price.
It did not require too much energy and skills.
QUESTIONS 5 – 7:
Read the following statements and choose
T if the statement agrees with the information in the passage
F if the statement contradicts the information in passage
NG if the statement is not mentioned in passage
Before the appearance of “Dance Dance Revolution”, exergaming was played widely.
(F/False)
Comparable “virtual reality” devices were too expensive and difficult for people in
general. (T)
Wii games should provide enough intense exercise to help students benefit from
exergaming. (NG)

Excuses for why people should not risk doing extreme sports are easy to

Young people today come to school with a different orientation than past
generations. Traditional student DISCIPLINING APPROACHES are no
longer successful for many people. The IRONY of punishment is that the
more you use it to control your students’ behaviors, the less real influence
you have over them. This is because pressure results in RESENTMENT.
In addition, if students aren’t DEFIANT because they are being forced to
behave, the teacher has failed. Students should behave because they
want to- not because they have to in order to avoid punishment. This self-
regulated behavior does not always occur in reality. Although educators
and psychologists PERSISTENTLY ADVOCATE encouragement rather
than punishment for children’s education, many teachers and parents
often argue that punishment is more effective than encouragement to
make a child become a DILIGENT student study DILIGENTLY. Rather
than COERCING good behavior, however, I insist teachers aim to
propagate responsibility rather than obedience.
