Sect 07 Formation Packer Shoes

This document section describes formation packer shoes used on the bottom of casing. It discusses Halliburton's 855 and 852 series packer shoes, including their components, operation, and specifications. Cup-type casing packer shoes are also mentioned. The 855 series uses flapper valves to protect low-pressure formations while running casing and helps prevent cement contamination. Orifice tubes allow casing to self-fill, and instructions are provided for installing them. The operation of setting the packer shoes is outlined in 7 steps. Specification directories provide additional technical details on the products.

Introduction 855 Series Formation

Packer Shoes
Halliburton formation packer shoes are installed
on the bottom of casing for applications where
casing will be set on top of a producing formation. Halliburton 855 Series formation packer shoes
The packer shoe has the following three uses: (with flapper valves) protect low-pressure forma-
tions from pressure surges while casing is being
● packing off the open hole below the casing to run. They also help prevent contamination of the
help protect low-pressure formations against cement caused by gas pressure below the forma-
cement contamination tion packer.

● floating and guiding casing to the bottom Three operating configurations are possible with
this formation packer shoe:
● allowing fluids to circulate through the end of
the shoe until the packer rubber is expanded ● running it with the flapper valve closed to
and set float the casing into the hole

In addition to the equipment described in this ● running it with an orifice tube to let the cas-
section, premium threads and special casing ing fill while running in the hole
grades are also available as customer service
items. ● running it as a collar by removing the plastic
guide nose

A setting ball and a latchdown plug and baffle are

packaged with each assembly. A latchdown plug
is required because the flapper-valve packer shoe
does not contain a backpressure valve to keep the
cement in place. The maximum recommended
differential pressure across the packer is 1000 psi
at temperatures below 200°F. For more informa-
tion about 855 Series formation packer shoes, see
Page 7-6.
