Advantages and Disadvantages of The Mining Industry
The Philippines is known for its rich land and waters filled with different types of
resources that will certainly lead the country to prosper. The Philippine seas are vast and
filled with different kinds of minerals, a vast variety of plates of seafood, and corals. And in
fact, the Philippine Sea is home to 3,212 species of fish, 486 species of corals,800 species of
seaweed, and 820 species of algae. It is also called the Pacific Ring of Fire due to the
presence of many active volcanoes and earthquakes in the surrounding regions.
And inland, the country has huge green and wonderfully rich lands that are good for
agriculture. Due to that, the Philippines is the top market for imports in Southeast Asia. But
aside from being advantageous regarding Agriculture, the country’s massive and minerally
prosperous lands are also good for cattle, goats, pigs, cow, and carabao raising.
However, there are also other industries aside from fisheries and agriculture that are
interested in exploring the resources of the Philippine land and waters, and one of them is the
Mining Industry. One specific industry giant is the Carrascal Nickel Corporation, which has
been operating since 2007 in Carrascal, in the mountains of Surigao del Sur in the CARAGA
Region.
Now, Mining Industry is not entirely unpleasant because first, they generate a huge
profit for the country and the city where they belong, increasing the area’s GDP. In 2010, the
output of the Philippine mining sector in terms of the total value was estimated to be P143.4
billion, contributing an estimated 1.7 percent to the country’s gross domestic product or GDP.
Second, they provide jobs and employment for the people who are residing in that
certain area of the mining company; therefore, it helps build and support the country’s
employment rate to grow.
And because of the sector's capacity to offer mineral resources that operate as raw
materials for manufacturing, building, and utilities as well, it plays a highly important role in
the quest for industrial development.
However, no matter how much the Mining Industry helps uplift the Philippine
Economy, it still has more disadvantages than advantages. The first disadvantage is the
damage that Mining does to the ecosystem, and this downside is the root of all problems that
then leads to strengthening natural disasters whenever they occur. One example of this
disadvantage is the massive logging of trees as seen in photos of what is happening in
Carrascal.
The mountains have now turned brown when it was actually covered with green
before. And due to that, the people of Carrascal are now more than ever prone to facing major
and frequent landslides as the land in the mountains has gone even softer and easier to
excavate as there are no more trees in the mountains anymore that can hold all the flood
water during heavy rainfall.
In addition to that, the ocean near the mountains that were once blue has now become
dirty and covered with brown due to all land that was excavated in the highlands that then
overflows down to the bodies of water. This then damages the corrals in the ocean, as well as
leads to fish poisoning which then damages the livelihood of those who fish for a living.
Perhaps there are advantages and disadvantages to everything on this planet as well as
humans’ individual decisions and choices. Either way, those pros, and cons should be
carefully and deliberately analyzed if one thing is worth it over another.
As a country with Mining as one of its economic giants, it is important for Filipinos to
identify if the amount of money that they gathered through mining is worth destroying the
Philippines’ beautiful land and waters. At the end of the day, it is a matter of choice.
