Lab 04 Chebyshev

This document describes the design of a Chebyshev low pass filter using Ansoft designer SV software. It involves designing both a 2nd order filter using a series inductor circuit and parallel capacitor circuit. The key steps are selecting the Chebyshev approximation, specifying the filter order, passband ripple, cutoff frequency and source/load resistance. This generates the S11 and S21 filter response graphs. It also discusses designing a 5th order Chebyshev low pass filter using series inductors or parallel capacitors.

DESIGN OF A CHEBYSHEV LOW PASS FILTER

Chebyshev filter:

Chebyshev filters are analog or digital filters having steeper roll off and more passband ripple (type I)
or stopband ripple (type II) than Butterworth filters. Chebyshev filters have the property that they
minimize the error between the idealized and the actual filter characteristic over the range of the
filter, but with ripples in the passband.

DESIGN PROCESS:
Ansoft designer SV is used to deploy two type of filter circuit

 Series Inductor Circuit

 Parallel Capacitor Circuit
Step 1:
 Start the new program, open the menu “View” and activate the different managers.

Step 2:

 Click the “New”-Button to start a new project.

 Choose “Insert Filter Design” in the Project Menu.

 A 'Filter Design Wizard' window will open, which includes filter belonging to following categories;
 Lowpass Filters
 Highpass Filters
 Bandpass Filters
 Bandstop Filters

 In the topology tab select > Ideal Lumped.

 In the approximation tab select > Chebyshev
 The “lumped component button” (marked by a coil and a capacitor) should be active.
 Press “Next”.
Step 3:
 In the specification window choose
 filter order = 2
 passband ripple = 0.1 dB
 cutoff frequency fp1 = 0.1 GHz
 Source and load resistance =50

 Press “Analyse”.
 See the S11 and S21 filter response either as “Narrowband” or as “Wideband” version.
 With "settings" tab the presentation mode can be modified. The plot response and the frequency
range can be modified.

 Press 'Next' to continue.

 Press “Finish”.
 The results and the presented circuit is for 'series inductor version'
 To observe the 'parallel capacitor version' select the 'Dual Circuit' button in the toolbar

5th ORDER FILTER CIRCUIT

 The filter of a circuit is equal to the number of lumped components connected in series or parallel
combination. These elements may include
 Inductors
 Capacitors
 Combination of Inductor and Capacitors
 Combination of Inductor, Capacitors and Transformers
 The ports are counted as elements in finding the order of filter by circuit design.
 Repeat the above steps to insert the circuit design of Lowpass Chebyshev Filter of Order 5.
 The 'Series Inductor Circuit' is shown in Figure.

 The Parallel Capacitor Circuit' is shown in Figure.
