Paper 2: Attempt three questions in all.
Question 1 (compulsory) and any other two.
1. The table below is for the relation y = px2 − 5x + q
x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5
y 21 6 -12 0 13
a.i) Use the table to find the values of p and q.
ii) Copy and complete the table.
b. Using a scale of 2cm to 1 unit on the x-axis and 2cm to 5unit on the y-axis, draw the graph
of the relation for −3 ≤ x ≤ 5.
c. Using your graph; find
i) the equation of axis of symmetry.
ii) the least value of y.
d. i) y when x = 1.8
ii) x when y = −8
2. a) During the Ghana 2008 semi-final match between Ghana and Cameroon, a ticket agent sold
tickets for "the popular stand" at GH₡25.00 per an adult and GH₡15.00 per child. In all, he
sold 400 tickets for a total amount of GH₡1,750.00. Find the number of
i) children
ii) adults who bought the ticket from the agent.
iii) how many more children than adult were at the sport stadium?
b. Tahiru’s father is two years older than his mother and his mother’s age is the square of his
own age. The sum of all the three ages is 80. Find how old is the father?
c. Using the method of completing of squares solve 4x2 − 7x + 1 = 0. Give your answer correct
to two decimal places.
3. a. The roots of the equation 2x2 + (m + 1)x + n = 0 are 1 and 3, where m and n are constants.
Find the values of m and n.
b) If P = {x : x+3
2
> 2x+1
3
} and Q = {x : 15 (x − 2) + 21 x > 1}. Find P ∩ Q
c) The operation ∗ is defined on the set of real numbers by
m ∗ n = m−n
n
, n 6= 0. Find the truth set of 8 ∗ x = 12 ∗ 3
4. a. A survey of students in cadet corps at Nungua Senior High School revealed the following;
55% liked football, 45% liked hockey, 40% liked athletics, 21% liked hockey and football, 26%
liked hockey and athletics and 16% liked football and athletics, 6% liked all three sports. If the
total students in the cadet corps are 200, find how many;
i) liked football and hockey but not athletics.
ii) liked exactly two of the sports.
iii) did not like any of the sports.
b. Find Z if 3Z + 132 = 162
5. a. When k is added to the expression y 2 − 12y, the expression becomes (y + p)2 . Find the value
of p and k.
b. If m varies directly as the sum of q and r, express q in terms of m and r, given that m = 3,
when q = 2 and r = 4.
