In this learning guide, we will be learning all about “Patintero” ‘game and its relation to improving physical fitness During our childhood days, we would usually stay outside playing different Philippine games. One of these is “Patintero” which I think some or many of| you are also familiar with. We would usually play outdoor, and involve much UNDERSTAND] — physical activity. At the end of our games, we would usually go home with sweat, ripped clothes, bruises and smelly bodies. It was common for us to be scolded by our parents but it was nothing compared to the fun and enjoyment we had with our friends and peers. We see traditional games as the best platform for friendship. Today's generation is different, We can see that most kids are stuck on their phones, iPads, and computers while staying on a comer living a sedentary lifestyle. READ TO. According to Guia, J. (2012) there is no doubt that the Philippines is rich in culture and tradition. One of the most significant aspects of the country’s culture and traditions is the traditional games in the Philippines. It is very popular among, children because these are the games or sports that they usually play, and that no Filipino who grows up having no experience of these traditional games. Page | of 7 PROPERTY OF THE PHILIPPINE SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SYSTEM ‘Traditional games such as “Patintero” are important because they keep the cultural values of our ancestors alive, It teaches children how to cooperate, strategize, and make friends with neighbors easily. It also encourages them to appreciate the ‘outdoors, whether it will be under the clear blue skies, grassy fields, and dimly lit streetlights. What is Patinter Patintero is more than a team game. In an article published in the atalyst (2020), patintero is said to have helped in “developing the player’s gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and strategie thinking”. The game also promotes team building. It is also known as harangang-taga or harang taga in Tagalog while block and catch in English. It is played either on an open field or in a covered basketball court, In the rural areas where vehicular traffic is minimal, children use the main road as their play area How to play Patintero? A. Objective of the Game The “passers team” should get as many of its players cross from the starting line through to the end of the rectangle and back without being tagged by the “guards’ team”, B. Materials Chalk/water Stopwatch D. Pre-Game First and foremost, the players group themselves into two teams: the passers and the guards (also called the offensive and the defensive). The teams may also be referred to as the runners and the taggers. Usually, each team is composed of 4 to 6 players each. But it may also involve more participants E. Rules of the Game 1. The game starts with the 2 teams doing a rock-paper- scissors (or what we locally call jak-en-poy) or by a coin toss. Whoever wins becomes the first passers. 2. The passers position themselves at the starting point (base), which is just behind the first crosswise line of the rectangle. While the guards stand on the lines. A guard ‘or two (depending on the number of players) is assigned ‘on each of the crosswise lines. 3. Guards can only move along their respective lines, except for the team leader who positions himself or herself on the first along the crosswise and length 4. The guards should tag the passers that come within their reach, including those who have run past them. But they must do it only when their feet are on the lines. Tagging ‘a passer when none or only one foot on the line is not valid. 6 The guards should prevent any passer from crossing the lines 7. Passers should be able to cross all the lines as quickly as possible, No passer should stay inside the square for more than 3 minutes (or depending on a set time the ‘teams have earlier agreed). 8. Once a passer successfully crosses all the lines and returns to the base without being tagged, his or her team ‘cams points. 9. Ifa passer is tagged, he or she is “eliminated” and stays back behind the starting point. He or she waits for his or her next tum to pass or wait until all members of the passers’ team are eliminated 10. Once all the passers are “eliminated”, their team becomes the Guards. And the game continues with the ‘two teams exchange roles, Below are movement skills in playing patintero and the physical fitness components that the players should develop. Fig. 2.2.3 Tagging Navigate | EXERCISE ROUTINE (Non-Graded): Below are exercises | 17 that will develop movement skills in playing patintero and 8 fitness components associated with the game. Create your own ‘warm-up and cool down exercise, then perform the given routine below. 1 WARM -UP (Create your own warm-up exercises, with 3 figures with 4 steps and 16 counts in each figure, repeat 2x.) I. EXERCISES 1. JUMPING JACKS a. Stand straight, legs together, hands at your sides, b. Slightly bend your knees and jump in the air. ¢. Spread your legs as you jump. Stretch your arms our overhead. 4. Jump back to starting position. ce. Repeat (at least 20 and max of 50 repetitions). 2. JUMPING ROPE (at least 30 repetitions) a, Hold the rope. Extend your hands and forearms at least a foot away from your body. b. Step over the rope. ¢. Use your hands and wrist to swing the rope overhead. 4d. Hop over the rope when it’s coming toward the front of your foot. 3. JOG IN PLACE (at least 3 minutes) a, Stand with feet hip distance apart b. Lift one foot then the other to jog in place. 4, AGILITY BALLS a. Using small ball/s, bounce them either to a partner. Ifyou're working out solo, bounce it against a wall. b. Practice catching the ball with two hands, then with your dominant hand only, and lastly, progress to catching it with your non-dominant hand.
