Lesson 6a Instructional Strategies in Teaching Visual Arts

The document discusses three instructional strategies for teaching visual arts: step-by-step approach, one demonstration approach, and artistic creative process. The step-by-step approach involves the teacher demonstrating each step one at a time, while the one demonstration approach has the teacher demonstrate all steps once for students to imitate. The artistic creative process allows students more exploration by posing challenges for students to envision and solve. The strategies vary in the level of support, time needed, and whether they promote exploration or mastery of skills. Examples of activities for each approach are also provided.

Step-by-Step Approach
(Direct Instruction)
The teacher demonstrate how to draw a face one step at a
time.
Each student is expected to do as per teacher‟s instruction
and the teacher can only move on to the next step once
students say that they are done.
One- Demo Approach (Direct
Instruction, Exploratory Learning)
The teacher demonstrates all steps, then students try
to imitate from memory. In the process, students also
have an opportunity to explore.
Artistic Creative Process( Inquiry-
Based, Exploratory Learning)
Teacher poses a challenge, then students explore,
envision and solve.
This process involves more input from the artist and
requires envisioning.
This enables the artist to apply the concepts and
techniques learned from the previous lesson.
When to use?
Step-by-Step One Demo Artistic Creative
Approach Process
o For children who need o For classes that can follow o For students who are
extensive support simple series of performance engaging and up for the
o Teaching a complex tasks or are already familiar challenge
procedure with the skill o Upper grade levels or
o For activities that have two or o For less complicated students with inclination in
three parts such as mixed procedure arts
media printing o Using an equipment such as o For students who were able
o When doing one- on- one press for printing, electric to show mastery in the
mentoring tools, or craft knife previous skill
o For more flexible art activities
that are reversible and do not
require accuracy
Disadvantages
Step-by-Step One Demo Artistic Creative
Approach Process
o Works on the students with o Sometimes students ask to o May require more time,
slowest pace repeat if they forget a step or sometimes more than one
o More time consuming cannot make it work session
o Does not promote exploration o Prone to student mistakes o Some students might get
and envisioning frustrated
o Teacher must strategically
facilitate learning by planning
carefully
Example Activities
Step-by-Step One Demo Artistic Creative
Approach Process
o 8- step Origami o Clay modeling o Games and challenges
o Water color blow painting or o Drawing with a pencil o Collaboration Projects
mixed media o Cutting and making a collage o Student Art Competition
o Directed drawing o Draw self- portrait showing o Quarterly or year- end final
o Directed painting emotions project
o First time to use paint o Situational questions or
o First time to draw self- limiting materials
portrait o Test of independent skill
Big Group Discussion
What makes an art activity „directed” ?

What makes an activity promote “artistic

behavior”?

What are the pros and cons of the three

instructional strategies? (Slide 2-Venn Diagram)
