Intellectual Disability
MENTAL RETARDATION- Described as "in transition"
- substantial limitations in present functioning.
1992 - the American Association for Mental Retardation (AAMR) stressed the distinction between the
terms trait and state as central in understanding of mental retardation.
Mental retardation is not a trait
Mental retardation is a condition or state
CLASSIFICATION OF MENTAL RETARDATION
Intermittent supports- are on "as needed" basis
Limited supports- are required consistently, though not on a basis. The support needed is of a non-
intensive nature.
Extensive supports- are needed on a regular basis; daily supports are required in some
environments
Pervasive supports- are daily extensive supports, perhaps of a life- sustaining nature required in
multiple environments.
Causes of Mental Retardation
Prenatal ( Occuring Before Birth )
Perinatal ( Occuring during Birth )
Postnatal ( Occuring shortly after Birth )
PRENATAL
Phenylketonuria (PKU) syndrome- Is a rare inherited disorder that
causes an amino acid called phenylalanine to build up in the body.
Down syndrome- It is a condition in which a person has an extra
chromosome.
PERINATAL
Intrauterine disorders Intrauterine growth restriction is a term used to describe a condition in which the
fetus is smaller than expected for the number of weeks of
pregnancy.
Neonatal disorders( Achondroplasia )-Achondroplasia is a genetic condition affecting a protein in the
body called the fibroblast growth factor receptor
POSTNATAL
Degenerative disorders- A disease in which the function or structure of the affected tissues
Seizure disorders - Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which a person has two or more unprovoked
seizures that occur more than 24 hours apart
CLASSIFICATION OF MENTAL RETARDATION
1. mild MR with IQ scores from 55 to 70
2. moderate MR with IQ scores from 40 to 54
3. severe MR with IQ scores from 25 to 39, and
4. profound MR with IQ scores below 25.
Learning and behavior characteristics
Three assessment models are used in Western countries. These are;
Traditional Assessment- In the traditional assessment model, the parents fill in a pre-referral form
about the family history
Team-based Assessment Approaches-

Viral infections, medications, complication during pregnancy or air pollutants.
GENETIC FACTOR
Rett syndrome, fragile X syndrome, and genetic mutation.
TREATMENT
Behavioral approaches- have the most evidence for treating symptoms of autism
Developmental Approaches- focus on improving specific developmental skills, such as language skills or
physical skills.
Educational Approaches. People with autism thrive on consistency and visual learning, according to the
"TEACCH" or Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication-Handicapped Children
