A couple of years back, one of my friends bought a dress online and when asked about where
she got it, her answer was "Instagram". I was puzzled at that time. Wasn't Instagram supposed
to be the 'share your life' kinda place where you were supposed to flaunt your Starbuck coffee
or a roadtrip snap with a ZNMD song playing in the backdrop. Instagram has changed a long
way since then, let's find out how?
Not going to technical jargon but it's basically a dedicated separate account for anyone who
wants to sell their products, ideas or services using Instagram to catalog their products.
Introduced in 2016 , it gained momentum in India after the low cost internet wave in 2017, when
the user base of Instagram rose sharply and business houses saw a potential in marketing their
product through Instagram.
● I think the game changer here is the ease of targeting a particular niche due to a large
user base, which was not possible earlier. Your business's presence on Instagram
makes sure that you do not miss out any opportunity to monetise on latest trends and
relevant hashtags.
● Instagram advertising platform: Apart from organic methods, you can use Instagram's
ad manager or advertising platform to increase your visibility, if you want to get an edge
over your competitors. It is a wonderful tool to let you target only relevant audiences with
an added benefit of being cost efficient. The average cost per click is around 36-146 rs
only (source: www.rankontechnologies.com). Isn't it great if that one click can turn into a
sale of hundreds or thousands.
● Free and Easy to use: Imagine you being an aspiring entrepreneur who wants to sell
online, which seems a better option- opening a website or starting an Instagram page.
This is no head scratcher question. Obviously, starting an Instagram page is much easier
and free of cost . A website costs you for a domain name, website developer, website
host etc depending on your needs. ( Wouldn't consider it if you're broke like me).
Remember when I told you about my friend who bought a dress from Instagram, I forget to
mention the fact that it came a size smaller and she requested the seller to return it but till now
she didn't get a response ( now she's losing weight to fit in that dress, the only option left for her)
. She swore after that she'll never buy anything from Instagram. The misconduct of one seller
shook her trust towards the whole Instagram market. Did you get that?
Lack of trust: Trust is the keystone of any business. The most valuable transaction, when you
trust someone with your time, efforts and hard earned money. Our Genz business model slack
behind in this department. No matter how intimidating a deal looks, we will always ask
ourselves, Is it worth the risk? Risks are obvious to consider when there is a lack of authorised
channel of transaction, delivery, and complaint redressal mechanism. A trusted website will
always garner more customer base, even though they offer the product at a higher price.(for
example amazon flipkart etc)
Way ahead: Instagram’s business platform undoubtedly has great potential, especially when it
comes to small businesses.Easy to set up, easy to use and budget friendly. But at the same
time we can expect a lot of improvements regarding the user experience. For example- An
important development in this direction could be the introduction of a proper review section (as
provided by most of the e-commerce sites), where a customer can post their comments giving
feedback on the services provided by the seller. I personally feel that this will greatly help in
establishing trust among the users as well as help the honest sellers to differentiate themselves
from the crooked ones. Hence, it will be a win-win situation.
