speaking activity in TASK 3.1. See Appendix 1 for the marking criteria for CA3.

In order to pass Continuous Assessment, you must participate in the tasks in all six CAs.

Important: All work you submit for this course must be original. Do not copy-paste from the
web or other sources - your contribution must be written in your own words. Any material
taken from another source must be credited. For more information, see:

CA3 Dedicated Foodies

Pre-task 3.1

1. Dedicated Foodies Part 2 self-correcting exercises

Do the exercises in Dedicated Foodies Part 2 > Alternative Foods in Materials in the
classroom. They’ll help you widen your vocabulary, revise grammar areas and you’ll read and
listen to ideas about the topic in the assessed task.

Don’t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar

points that you have learnt in the I’ve learnt something today! folder.

2. Prepare for pair work speaking

Write to your Group Discussion in your Work Group space to find a partner from your group
for the speaking activity. Once you have a partner, agree on a day and time to meet in
Tandem. Decide which one of you will invite the other in Tandem.

TASK 3.1 Dedicated Foodies!

Before you do TASK 3.1 with your partner in Tandem, do the

self-correcting exercises in Dedicated Foodies Part 2 > Communication
Strategies.

You’ll do two pair work speaking activities in the classroom Tandem:

CA3 Practice and CA3 Assessed.

First do CA3 Practice and then do CA3 Assessed. CA3 Assessed has four tasks and your
teacher will assess your speaking in your first attempt of Task 3 or Task 4. After you finish
the last task in CA3 Assessed, decide together which task you want your teacher to assess -
Task 3 or Task 4. To do that, watch your recording and email each other to come to a
decision.

Finally, one of you needs to post a message to the classroom Forum > CA3_Tandem to tell
the teacher which task you would like to be assessed and the minute it starts in the video.
Note the general advice below for pair work speaking tasks:

CA3 Dedicated Foodies

Pair work speaking tips!

● Read the Tandem FAQs document in the classroom before you start!
● Your teacher will assess how well you and your partner speak together naturally on
your first attempt so don’t over-prepare or read from a prepared script and
remember to speak in English as soon as you’re connected!
● Use each others’ names at the start and during the activity.
● Tandem only works when both students are connected. One student must "invite"
the other student to do the activity, so first decide who will "invite". To invite your
partner, find your partner's name in dropdown menu 1; select the task in dropdown
menu 2 and click start. Your partner will receive the "invitation" and must click start.
Tandem and the videochat will open in new tabs or windows in your browser.

Post-task 3.1

Reflect on speaking performance

Watch the video you did in Tandem and share your thoughts with your classmates in I’ve
learnt something today! in the Forum. Think about the following questions:

● Did you feel nervous before/during the pair work speaking?

● How natural did you sound?
● How could you improve?

Pre-task 3.2

1. Dedicated Foodies Part 1 self-correcting exercises

Do the exercises in Dedicated Foodies > Part 1 Food TV in Materials in the classroom. They’ll
help you widen your vocabulary, revise grammar areas and you’ll read and listen to ideas
about the topic in the assessed task.

Don’t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar points
that you have learnt in the I’ve learnt something today! folder in the Forum.

2. What are you reviewing for TASK 3.2?

Choose a video from ONE of the YouTube chef channels (from the four options below) to
write about.

TASK 3.2 Online Food TV critics needed!

You see this announcement on a weekly online TV Guide:

Tasty reviews wanted!

Have you noticed all of the YouTube channels well-known chefs have lately? So
many of them share their videos with us, but really, what is so unique about
what they have to offer?

Below are the links to four YouTube channels of some well-known chefs, from various
countries. Choose ONE of these YouTube channels and then watch ONE of their videos. Then
write us a review of 150-200 words of the video you decide to watch.

- Nigella Lawson (United Kingdom):

https://www.youtube.com/c/NigellaLawsonChannel
- Tre Wilcox (U.S.A): https://www.youtube.com/c/trewilcoxvideos/featured
- Marion Grasbury (Thai/Australian):

- Jamie Oliver (United Kingdom): https://www.youtube.com/c/jamieoliver

In your review you need to:

● give the review a catchy title
● give examples of what is discussed or made in the video
● say what the style of the chef is and how they communicate with the audience
(how unique are they?)
● say why you love or hate the video
● say who you would recommend the video to and why

Your review must also include the YouTube link to the video you write about.

The best reviews will be published on our webpage!

The review about the YouTube video you’ve chosen must be uploaded to the Continuous
Assessment Register* and post it to the Forum > CA3_Reviews. Write 150-200 words and
add the word count at the end of the review.

*You must upload TASK 3.2 in a Word document to the Continuous assessment register. If
it is not uploaded to the register, you will get a 0 for this task.

Use the Review_plan_tips_example document to help you write your review and read
others critically. The example review will show you the appropriate paragraph structure
starting with an introduction, the main points (in 2 paragraphs) and then end with a

conclusion in which you can give your own opinion and recommendations. You’ll also see
the appropriate language style (more formal) for a review and some linking words /
expressions to help the reader follow your argument.

Before you write, plan your review. You can use the essay plan for ideas in Appendix 2 and
the template in Appendix 3 for this.

You can also find an example and ‘ingredients’ (verb tense, adjectives, etc.) for writing a
Review in the self-correcting exercises Dedicated Foodies (Part 1) > 01.04 Writing. Use the
Writing_checklist in the classroom to check your writing. When you finish, send your Review
to the Forum > CA3 Reviews folder.

Post-task 3.2

1. Error correction
Complete the Error Correction exercise your teacher posts to the classroom. The errors in
this exercise are common errors students often make at this level.

2. Q & A
Read at least two of your classmates’ reviews in the Forum and ask them a question about
what you’ve read in the Forum. You can ask questions about the content of their review or
ask them to clarify something you didn’t understand.

Don’t forget to read your classmates’ questions and reply to them.
