Needs and Interest

Learning Essentials:
Major Principles of Development:
1. Development is relatively orderly. Development follows directional
patterns such as, from the head to the toe (cephalocaudal), and
from the center of the body then outwards (proximodistal).

2. Development takes place gradually.

3. All domains of development and learning ------physical, social and

emotional, and cognitive- are important, and they are closely
interrelated.

4. Development proceeds toward greater complexity, self-regulation,

symbolic, or representational capabilities.
OBSERVATION GUIDE for the LEARNERS’ CHARACTERISTICS
Physical
1. Observe their gross motor skills on how they carry themselves, how
they move, walk, run, go up the stairs, etc.
The kids are undeniably active and participative. They carry themselves
according to their age and state of well-being. Most of the students I have
encountered are 2nd to 3rd graders. Just as their nature, they move, walk,
and run playfully. They are all physically healthy. Their capacity of doing a
task which involves large muscles is quite well. The students are indeed
responsive to physical or recreational activities.

2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth?

The students’ gross movements are deliberate or smooth. Though they are
hyper yet they still manage to do stuffs consciously and carefully most
especially when they are given clear instructions.

3. How about their fine motor skills? Writing, drawing, etc.

When it comes to their fine motor skills, all is definitely alright. By the
moment that the learners are given time to rest, they play marbles and
puzzles which are really evident that their construction skill is developing.
Also, some of them are conscious in self-care. I had an experience wherein
Hamza and Sodaiz, both are second graders came to me and showed how
they tie shoelaces as well as when eating, the students carefully open their
lunch boxes and food bags.

Social
1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults.
The students sometimes are annoying but I believe that they shouldn’t be
blamed with that because definitely it’s part of their social development. I
say this for the reason that the way students interact with teachers and
other adults show much crave for attention. They have this attitude of
always seeking it from the people around them. But one thing that matters
is that, they do not forget to submit themselves to their teachers’ authority.

2. Note how they interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are
their concerns?
They are sociable enough in nature that is why they interact with each other
in an expressive way. Considerably, they have few misunderstandings but
not to the extent of hurting one another but in a kids’ typical manner. They
mostly talk about themselves like what they want and what are the things
they are passionate about. Boys’ concerns are about ball games and girls
like talking about dances and videos on tiktok. Technology really influenced
them most.
Emotional
1. Describe the emotional disposition or temperament of the learners.
(happy, sad, easily cries, mood-shifts)
Since I am more exposed in lower grades such as grades 1, 2, and 3 I can
say that the emotional disposition or temperament of the learners are
changing from time to time, there were times they are so energetic they
participate in class such as answering the questions during the discussion
of the teacher but later on they become grumpy and they wanted to go
home because according to them, they are already tired and sleepy.

2. How do they express their wants / needs? Can they wait?

They express their wants/needs in an immediate manner through directly
telling us anything that should be done right away. For an instance, when it
is already 10’oclock they keep on asking me if it’s already time to go home
that’s why when they finished their activities. I let them play until lunch time
came. They’re not patient in waiting. All they think of is that they must make
and have some fun together which I support also because this will develop
them holistically.

3. How do they handle frustrations?

It’s common for children to have some little issues of quarrel. When the
learners get annoyed or upset, basically they just looked for a quite distant
seat and there kept silent but just for a while. I as a student-teacher was
challenged much on restoring peer relationships.

4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behavior. Are they

self-conscious?
If I were to describe, I would say that mostly are very confident. They love
having conversation with me and to the rest of my co-student teachers.
They also showcase what they can do and not afraid to tell and share to us
what are those things they tend to get afraid of. Their confidence is
somehow an open door for them to learn more.

Cognitive
1. Describe their ability to use words to communicate their ideas. Note
their language proficiency.
The students are truly talkative particularly the higher grades. Their ability to
use words to communicate their ideas is excellent. They can construct
thoughts easily and comprehensively. Afterward, their way of sharing those
ideas is convincing. They are language proficient and are able to respond to
questions relative to what they shared about.

2. Describe how they figure out things. Do they comprehend easily?

Look for evidence of their thinking skills.
In figuring out things, the students are risk-takers. I have observed how
willing and eager they are to discover things even though these are not
familiar to them. They are indeed critical thinkers. Their interest leads them
to comprehend things easily.
3. Were their opportunities for problem-solving? Describe how they
showed problem-solving abilities.
There was this one afternoon when we are having our general cleaning, we
decided to clean the roof of the stage but we realized that we don’t have
enough cleaning materials to reach the roof. So, one of the students gather
a stick, a long one and tie it in a stick broom.

REFLECT
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your own
experiences when you were their age? What similarities or
differences do you have with the learners you observed?
While I was observing the learners, I can somehow relate to them
when I was in their age because just like them, I am sometimes
mischievous where I keep on playing in the classroom, I am not listening
to my teachers, etc. but the good thing is that when my teacher says that
we have to listen and stop playing, me and my classmates will immediately
listen and stop playing unlike to the students nowadays that you must
have a very long patient because they don’t listen and follow right away.

2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons.

How did he/she help or not help you with your needs ( physical,
emotional, social and cognitive? How did it affect you?
I had a teacher in high school that I will never forget, He is our teacher
in Personal Development or PerDev and we call him Sir G. Sir G taught
me a lot both in academics and life lessons (emotionally). What sir G
taught me had a big impact on my life because until now I still
remembered and carried all that until I went to college.

3. Share your other insights here.

Children are jolly but most of the time are mischievous especially
children nowadays, they won’t listen to you right away but as a student
dreaming of becoming a teacher, I realized that I should bear in mind that
they are still children and I should be the one who will understand them
and I should have long patient and also, I should think of many teaching
strategies so that I can easily caught the attention of the students during
class discussions.
ACTIVITY 2. Show your Learning Artifacts
2.1. Research on Theory of Development. Which is your favorite
theory of development?. How can this guide you as a future
teacher?

John Piaget's cognitive theory is one of my favorite developmental

theories. In this theory, Piaget believed that learning proceeded by the
interplay of assimilation (adjusting new experiences to fit prior concepts) and
accommodation (adjusting concepts to fit new experiences). The to-and-fro of
these two processes leads not only to short-term learning, but also to long-
term developmental change. The long-term developments are really the main
focus of Piaget’s cognitive theory. I know that this theory will help and guide
me to become a better future teacher because this theory requires students to
use their minds, or brains, in order for them to think critically. This will also
help me to understand the children as Piaget proposed in this theory the 4
stages of development, the sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years),
preoperational stage (2 to 7 years), concrete operational stage (7 to 11
years), and formal operational stage (ages 12 and up). I’ve learned in this
theory that the intelligence of children differs from that of adults in terms of
quality rather than quantity. This means that children think and reason
differently than adults and also, I’ve learned that the best way to understand
children’s reasoning is to see things from their point of view.
