PHYSICAL EDUCATION

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

What can I expect from a PHE class?


In general, a physical health education subject focuses on physical fitness and the
health benefits associated with physical fitness. The subject will include topics like
movements competence and concepts such as stretching, strategic gameplay for
sports, health and wellness, and the impact of physical activity.

Big Idea: How do I live a healthy and balanced life?


Subject Goal: Students will understand the relationship between physical fitness and
physical activity and living a healthy and balanced life.
Curricular Outcomes: To promote students’ personal fitness and encourage their
involvement in physical fitness and physical activity, not only during physical education
class, but also as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.

RESPECT . . . TEAMWORK, SAFETY AND SPORTSMANSHIP
 CELL PHONE POLICY: No Cell Phones in the Gym or inside of the classroom.
 Show respect for classmates and teachers.
 Work cooperatively with classmates and no put downs.
 Use equipment appropriately.
 Stay with the class; arrive on time and don’t leave early.
 Demonstrate fair play, polite behavior’
RESPONSIBILITY . . . Be responsible for your education!
 Come to class ON TIME and be changed and ready to go on time.
 Dress in appropriate PE clothes: shorts/pants, t-shirt, jacket/sweatshirt, socks,
and sneakers. Be prepared to stay inside or to go outside for class. Be prepared
to go to the gym anytime or classroom.
 Leave electronic devices in your PE locker or in inside of your bag, but without
have access to the device.
NON-PARTICIPATING STUDENTS: ELECTRONICS MUST BE OFF AND OUT OF
SIGHT
 Lock up your belongings or leave valuables in either the Girls’ or Boys’ PE
office.
 Attend class - class cuts will result in a ZERO and the class can NOT be
made up.
 Check Managebac for your grade and missing classes.
 MAKE-UP ANY AND ALL MISSING CLASSES!
Medicals:
 If you have a physical injury that prohibits or limits your physical activity, a note or a
certificate is needed from your physician. The note must include all days in which you
cannot participate or your limitations. Students are allowed no more than five medicals
per semester.
Evaluation: You will receive a DAILY PE Grade of up to 8 points per class
 WARM-UP/FITNESS: 3 points
 Warm-Up includes activities to get your heart pumping. It may include a
warm-up jog and dynamic stretching.
 Fitness includes activities to improve your physical fitness level. It may
include activities such as body weight exercises and cardio activities.
 You are assessed on appropriate demonstration of exercises, positive
participation and display of effort, and teamwork, safety, and sportsmanship.
 ACTIVITY: 5 points
 Activity is based on the class in which you are enrolled.
 You are assessed on use of appropriate rules of activity or game, demonstration
of proper skills and strategies of activity or game, engagement in positive
participation and display of effort, and teamwork, safety, and sportsmanship.
7-8 EXCELLENT Performance
6-5 GOOD Performance
4-3 ADEQUATE Performance
2 MINIMAL Performance (Failing Grade)
1 POOR Performance (Failing Grade)
0 NO PARTICIPATION
**ONE ZERO WILL BE DROPPED AT THE END OF EACH UNIT**

 Students may make up a PE class if they . . .

Effort & Performance (2 points)
1 Consistent top effort, excellent performance of stretches and exercises, models
a high level of participation, self-motivated, committed to improving fitness of
self and others.
0.5 Good effort, good performance of stretches and exercises, may need some
reminders to participate, needs to work harder to improve personal fitness
0.5 Poor effort, little movement during stretches and exercises and/or poor
performance, may have numerous excuses for inactivity, socializing may
interfere with participation, does not work hard enough to improve personal
fitness
0 Limited or no effort, limited or no completion of stretches or exercises
Sportsmanship (1 points)
0. Models’ consistent exemplary behavior and positive attitude, helps and supports
5 classmates
0. Inconsistent behavior. Needs some reminders to: listen and follow directions, to
5 follow safety rules, to use equipment appropriately, and to stay on task
0 Poor behavior, disrespectful, uncooperative. Needs constant reminders to stay
on task and follow directions. Talks during directions, ignores safety rules, cell
phone usage
ACTIVITY (5 points)

3 Consistent top effort, models a high level of participation, self-motivated, excellent
understanding of skills and strategies or performance of activity.
2 Good effort, good performance of most skills and game strategies/activity
components, satisfactory understanding of skill concepts or activity components.
1 Poor effort, inadequate performance of skills with little or no development, poor
understanding of basic skills and game strategy, contributes little to team
play/activity.
0 Limited or no effort and/or participation, limited or no understanding of basic skills
and game strategy, does not contribute to team play/activity.
Sportsmanship (2 points)

2 Models’ consistent exemplary behavior and positive attitude, accepts


winning/losing respectfully, shows respect of opponents, helps out and supports
classmates.
1 Inconsistent behavior and/or inconsistently follows rules, plays well when on
winning team or when being observed by teacher. Needs some reminders to:
listen and follow directions, to follow safety rules, to use equipment appropriately,
and to stay on task during activity.
0 Poor behavior, disrespectful, uncooperative, bends rules to suit self, displays
inappropriate frustration and anger towards others, celebrates mistakes of others.
Needs constant reminders to stay on task and follow directions. Talks during
directions, ignores safety rules, cell phone usage.
