Week 6 Discussion Forum (Classism)

This document discusses classism and welfare in the United States. It defines the poor as those who are unable to provide for their daily needs through their own means and often require government assistance. Welfare is described as government assistance provided to citizens who do not earn enough to financially support themselves, and can include unemployment benefits, public housing, food stamps, and other programs aimed at providing temporary support until individuals can become self-sufficient. Classism exists in how some view and dismiss the reality of poverty in America, despite there being many who work multiple jobs but still require welfare assistance to afford basic cost of living expenses.

Classism: Welfare in the United States (US)

Who do you think the poor are in the United States?

The poor in the US are mostly comprised of people who are unable to provide for themselves

daily. They cannot sustain the bare minimum acceptable lifestyle whereby they have resources to

go through. In the YouTube video, Roy emphasized that people often dismiss the reality that

poverty does exist even in the US (GlobalPOV, 2013). However, they made it clear that it does

happen in the country, especially because there are people who are still seeking welfare

constantly. The poor people are those who have to work two to three jobs, burning themselves

out in the process. Even though they work hard, they are still incapable of paying for their daily

needs without assistance from the government. This proves that their income is still insufficient

to sustain their lives. It is not the same interpretation of who is poor compared to third-world

countries; however, the mere fact that these people will not have a good quality of life without

government stability communicates that they are inherently poor.

How do you define welfare?

Simply put, welfare is government assistance given to those who do not earn enough to support

themselves financially and economically. Welfare schemes are created to help people out in

numerous ways. This may include unemployment assistance or public housing provision

(Koppelman, 2019). Welfare can also come in the form of food stamps, which would allow

people to purchase their goods directly. The goal of welfare is to provide support to the citizens

until they come to the point that they can support themselves. It is to relieve people of the

anxiety of whether or not they would lose their homes. It gives people that ample cushion of

comfort, allowing them to have an opportunity to focus on their respective careers
