When you look into a space as innovative and evolving

as the mobility space, you will find that the majority of the
app entrepreneurs who enter the market are those who are
employed somewhere full-time.

The reason behind mobility space witnessing a high demand

from the young generation who are already employed
somewhere is that the industry offers the biggest ease of
joining and scope of innovation to the generation that suffers
from getting too bored too soon, as compared to any other
domain.

The fact that mobile apps are something that Generation

Y is hooked onto every waking hour, makes it a business
model that they are most accustomed to and have a surety
of success in.

This book is dedicated to every employee who wishes to

quench their thirst to learn and do something new while
working under the safety net of an establishment. We will
help you make owning a small business on the side of a 9 to
5 job a possibility.

Check the Legal Aspects

The first part of getting started with starting your own
app business while still being employed in a full-time job
is ensuring that you are not legally bound to not start a
business.

There are a number of businesses, across various industries,

that asks its employees to not generate money from other
sources while being employed with them, to an extent that
you might even get sacked and penalized.

So, before you even think about a business idea, talk to your
company’s HR or your company’s legal team and check if
they too have a similar clause. You can even take out your
joining documents and peruse it in much detail to check if
the clause is mentioned there.

Once you have ensured that you are allowed to start a

business, from the legal side of it all, it is time for you to get
started with an idea.

Find a Multi-Million
Business Idea
The next and most crucial step is to think of an idea you
would be entering the mobile app domain with. Finding an
idea which you think would succeed in the market is not an
easy task.

With millions of apps being present in the App Store and

Play Store currently and fifties of apps launched on a daily
basis, the chances of your app idea being one of a kind are
very rare and next to impossible.

So what should be done? How can you come up with an idea

that is new in the industry and something that the world has
not seen yet?

Successful App Entrepreneur 3

Here are some practical steps on how to go about it.

A. Study the pain points of people around you

The success behind some of the biggest brands of our time

- Airbnb and Uber, etc. - have been their analysis of the real
world problems that were considered too ignorable to be
attended to.

Uber started as an aftereffect of the inconvenience that

two friends faced while trying to reach home after a game,
while Airbnb emerged as the solution to earn easy money
by renting out mattresses in a busy city where hotels were
seldom vacant.

Just like Airbnb and Uber, your app can also be a result of a
real-world problem that masses face.

B. Go through the app stores thoroughly

App Stores are filled with apps belonging to a range of

different categories. If you look at the categories that interest
you, your vision will return a picture of an idea bank.

App stores are filled with apps that are waiting for an upgrade
in terms of functionalities or even offerings, something that
you can take advantage and offer in your mobile app.

Within the app stores, you will see that there are quite a few
apps offering subsets of the same service, while they could
have been offered as one superset application.

Going through the app store and play store will get you a
number of ideas which are great to get started with.

C. Look at the direction investors are moving in

Another mode to get ideas which are a near-definite hit in

the market is by looking at the investor’s movement

2021-22
©2019 Appinventiv
Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 4

By looking at websites like ProductHunt and Ycombinator,

TechCrunch etc., you will get a direct idea of what the
investors are looking for.

The reasons behind why we are suggesting you take this

route is because investors, unlike the usual tech enthusiasts
are more into the research and know which idea would prove
to be useful for them and which won’t.

So, if you find investors going behind an app idea, know that
the chances of success would be very high for that business.

D. Step into the Future

ecoming futuristic is another way for you to find business

ideas. By looking into how the future would be in terms of
upcoming technology or industries that will get the limelight
in the future, you will be able to invest your efforts into an
idea that would be in demand in the time to come.

It would help to look at the upcoming trends of the mobile

app and tech industry to get an idea of which technology set
will be in demand next. And when you devise an idea that
contains the trend that is soon going to be mainstream, you
will be able to prepare your app for not just the present but
also for the future.

E. Participate the Tech World

One of the sure shot ways to get an idea for your mobile
app is to participate in the technology and startup world.
Become a part of conferences or meetups that happen over
the weekends - so that your main job doesn’t suffer - and
look into the areas that have been discussed. Listen to the
issues that get highlighted there, which are leading to the
tech revolution and see if they can be solved through mobile.

By becoming a part of such meetups and conferences,

you also get a chance to network with like-minded people
and mentors who are willing to get you started with the
entrepreneurship world.

03

Ensure the Viability

We are sure that the approaches mentioned above would be
enough to get you at least 5 to 10 ideas that you can invest
your energy in to get it transformed into an app that offers
real value to your business.

But how do you validate if your idea is actually viable and

you are out to settle problems that actually exist instead of
something that you think is a problem?

Let us answer that for you.

There are two ways to go about it - A. By seeing if there are

similar app in the stores and B. By asking the potential users
what they think of your app idea.

Analyze the Popular App of your App Category

Look at the app you wish to become a similar and better app
competitor to on these fronts
• See if they have received any funding

2021-22
©2019 Appinventiv
Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 6

• Measuring the performance of the app in terms of

download and reviews
• Seeing the number of employees they have through
LinkedIn

If the answer to all the three is positive, you should go with

the app idea.

Ask Potential Users

Identify your potential users and ask them what they think of
your mobile app idea.

There are several platforms that you can head to get users’
opinion -

Social Media Groups - post your app idea on Facebook,

LinkedIn, and Twitter groups or communities and seek
opinion.

Reddit - post your app idea on startup based subreddit and

get an opinion from some of the most engaged people on
this planet - Reddit-ians.

Twitter - Use the Twitter Vote feature to get votes on what

people think about your app.

Connect With an Engineering

Team who Understands
Once you have the idea and the help to get you started
in the mobile app business, the next and crucial part that
you will have to attend to is partnering with a mobile app
development company that will help convert your idea into
a functioning app that offers real value to the masses in
return of fame and revenue.

Here’s how to go about it.

The whole process of finding a mobile app development

team can be divided into several steps. But, the starting
point, under all scenarios is finding an answer to Where to
Find the right App Development Company.

There are a number of places you can meet your service

partner. Places that go beyond typing in ‘Best Mobile App
Development Company’ in Google search.

2021 Appinventiv
©2019 Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 8

Social Media - Portals like LinkedIn and Meetup are

considered to be two of the best social media platforms
to find mobile app development agencies. If you are
planning to take the social media route, do look at
the number of people in the team, photos of the team,
reviews and ratings that the company has received, etc.

Service Agency Directories - There are a number of

reliable directories online who contains the list of top
mobile app development companies in both - a specific
location and nation/worldwide. The Two that both
Enterprise and SME clients of ours rely on is AppFutura
and Clutch.

Job Portals - The third option that you have when it

comes to finding a partner mobile app development
agency is heading to job portals like Indeed and Monster
or freelance websites like Upwork.

While these portals might come in handy when you are

looking for an individual team member like designer or
developer or a single tester, it is not recommended if you
want the support of a whole team that would take care of
your end-to-end mobile app development requirement.

After you dig in further into either or all of the venues

above, I am sure you will find a list of prospects that you
can think of getting associated with.

Then comes the next crucial step - Finalizing a Mobile

App Development Company.

Finalization of one agency out of the many options that

you have shortlisted would require a deep level analysis
that would revolve around

1. Looking at the company’s experience in developing

an app similar to yours
2. Digging into client reviews to see what experience
they have given to clients

2021-22
©2019 Appinventiv
Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 9

3. Size of the team - if they have a concentrated team

to handle all the different areas of the mobile app
development process
4. Mode of Communication - Note what mode of
communication they follow to manage the different
time zone. The idea here is that at least one of the
POC should be available to listen to your need at all
times.
5. Does the company keep the source code or transfers
it
6. The engagement model they follow in terms of project
delivery and costing (Here’s the engagement model
we follow)
7. The Technology Stack that they work on - See if
they are updated with the latest technologies that
the industry is following and how open they are in
experimenting with and adopting new tech stack
8. The post-deployment maintenance that they offer. In
our case, we offer a series of different post-launch
maintenance services free of cost for 60 days after
the app hits the market.
An in-depth analysis will most definitely give you an
idea of how to finalize at least 3 - 5 agencies from your
shortlisted list.

The final decision of which mobile app development

company to go with will ultimately be decided after you
have had a preliminary call with them and gauged how
updated they are about the industry and the associated
technologies. Also, how prompt they are in terms of
giving you suggestion on your idea to make it better.

The last deciding factor would be the cost and delivery

time. So, make sure you have shared your budget and
launch time expectation in the first call itself.

Tip:Be wary of app development companies who ask for money for every extra service
that they offer, no matter how small the job at hand is and also from them who insists
on the mantra ‘If you need a good app, you will have to spend at least this much’.

Once you have reached the stage where you have to

finalize an agency out of the selected few, take the
interaction forward by asking them to develop an MVP
for you.

There are a number of reasons why you shouldn’t insist

on or even choose to get a full-fledged app made but
invest in MVP. Some of the most prominent ones that
drive new entrepreneurs like you are:

• MVPs are a lot more cost and time efficient

• They give a clear idea of whether or not your app will
be accepted in the market
• They are realistic to build upon • They are a good
starting point to get funded

Make Your App Goals

SMART
Now that you have found yourself a viable idea, a co-
founder to make starting a business while having a full-time
job easier and a partner in the mobile app development
agency, it is time to get started with the whole process.

While you will have a minimal hand in how the technical

development happens, it is very important for you to set
realistic goals at the starting of the development itself.

It is very important for you to be open about what your

expectations are in terms of delivery milestone and the
completion date of the project.

Although it won’t be wise or even a smart move to ask the

agency to deliver the complete app within a very short
period of time, it won’t be smart to keep a time frame of a
much later date, as it would make your app irrelevant.

The 2 Ms: Marketing

and Monetization
While your partnered mobile app development company
is working on the technical development part, you should
meanwhile center your focus on setting a monetization
strategy and planning for the app’s marketing.

Let us look at both the elements one by one.

How to Market Your App

There are two ways to go about marketing your mobile app

- A. For Free and B. Paid Advertisement.

At this stage when you don’t have a mobile app, you should
focus on the marketing specific to creating awareness about
the app and above all make strategies for the time when the
app will be launched in the app store.

At this stage where you are trying to gauge the efforts and

money it would require to get started with your mobile app

marketing, there are quite a few sources that you should
focus on.

Let us look at what they are.

A. Creation of a Website

Although not compulsory, it helps to have a website in line

with your mobile app. While your app will not function as an
extension of the website, it will be nonetheless promoted on
your website.
The reason we emphasize the creation of a website is that
they create a sense of authenticity among the prospect users
as they feel that the app and your whole brand is legitimate.

B. Social Media

Social Media - Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and

Twitter have together proved themselves to be one of the
best ways to promote a mobile app. Through social media,
you get face to face with your target group in platforms that
they frequent.

Now, even in social media, there are two ways to go about

the promotion - A. Free and B. Paid.

Under the free section, you get the option to create groups,
pages, and communities to attract and engage like-minded
people. The paid section comprises advertisements that run
on the social media channels which are strategically timed
and rightfully planned to target just the right set of people
on social media.

C. Media and PR

Depending on the reach you are looking to target, you will

be requiring media and PR agencies to take the word about
your mobile app ahead to the world. There are a number of
tech-related media agencies and PR companies that will be
willing to cover your app store with an attached cost.

2021-22
©2019 Appinventiv
Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 14

The cost of media and PR coverage come attached to a cost,

something that you should only invest in if you are looking
for a mass coverage and your audience is spread a big
geographical area.

D. Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing, over time, has garnered a lot of

interest from among the young generation belonging to the
10 - 34 years age group. If your target audience falls in this
age range too, influencer marketing can be a great way to
promote your mobile app.

However, out of all the methods of promotions mentioned

here, influencer marketing is known to be the most expensive
one for with the growing demand, the cost that influencers
charge has also increased.

E. Search Advertisement

Google Search Advertisement or PPC is also seen as an

ideal form of mobile app marketing strategy. By running an
ad on the category that your app belongs to, you will be
able to take your app to the millions of active internet users
who are looking for an offering that is similar to what your
app deals in.

How to Earn Money Through Your App

No matter what your mobile app is about, the outcome that

everyone who enters the mobile app industry wishes to gain
is High Revenue.

There are quite many ways through which you can earn
revenue on your mobile app, but the four that are most
commonly applied by the mobile app entrepreneurs that are
known to get high benefits to the businesses are:

A. In-App Purchases

In case of an in-app purchase, you attach cost in some of

2021-22
©2019 Appinventiv
Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 15

your app element to drive users to buy the element in return

of taking actions that they are otherwise restricted to.
Mostly seen in a gaming ecosystem, apps charge extra
money from the players in return of coins, a new weapon, or
the chance to move on to the next level.

B. In-App Advertising

Going by its name, in-app advertising is where you show ads

of another app within your application and for every click or
view on the advertisement, the advertisers pay you money.
This monetization can be used in a number of different app
categories - Games, media streaming, and in some cases
eCommerce as well.

C. Freemium

Unlike its name, this monetization doesn’t come sans

attached cost. What happens here is that you give your users
quality features in free mode and then ask them to upgrade
to get access to the advanced features of your mobile app.
Business models in which these generally fit are - content
based mobile apps and photo, video editing apps.

D. Sponsorship

This is one of the least used monetization models of four but

still holds true. In the case of the sponsorship monetization
model, you approach a popular app belonging to your
category and propose to act as an extension of their app by
getting your app redesigned according to their UI, in return
of shared increase in user base.

07

Set a Date and

Publicize it
Once you have planned your strategies related to both
marketing and monetization and your app development
process is getting nearer to completion, it is time to fix a
launch date for your app, after having a discussion with your
partnered mobile app development agency.

There are a number of things that you will have to consider

when fixing a launch date for your mobile app, but let’s not
grab you down the rabbit hole of a million things that you
should look for before fixing your mobile app launch date.

Let us straightway give you the insights that we have

analyzed with respect to the days and months that tend to
be the golden period for the mobile app entrepreneurs for
the app launch and days when less profit is drawn.

Usually, the best time of the year to launch a mobile app is

over the weekend, mid-month, in February or December. As

2021-22

for iOS apps, specifically, you should consider Thursdays as

well, for Apple updates the Featured and New App lists on
every Thursday.
As for the worst time of the year to launch a mobile app, it is
something like last Wednesday of the last week of August.

If you don’t want to take the route of our experience of

having worked with over 700 app entrepreneurs, you can
another route too - Look at the launch date that apps which
are popular in your category, followed. It will give you an
idea of what your launch date should be.

Once the launch date is finalized, it is time to get the

marketing strategy that you made in the last chapter into
practice.

It is time to focus on getting the words out about a value

offering that is going to get added to the users’ life. Well, if
you read the last chapter, you know what to do. So, instead
of reminding you something that you already know, let us
move on to the next crucial step - Posting your app in the
stores after optimizing them.

things that we would do differently, if we

08

Publish Your App,

Optimally
Now that you have reached the time when the app is nearly
complete to be posted on the App Store and Play Store,
the next thing remaining to do before you make an official
launch in the stores is - Make Sure Your App is Optimized to
Rank Well on the Stores

The process you follow to make this possible is through ASO

or App Store Optimization. What you do to make sure your
app is properly optimized and is ready to get you million
of revenues and high download rates is what we will cover
now.

This chapter is all about making sure your mobile app is

ready to be published in the stores.

Here’s how to go about it.

2021-22
©2019 Appinventiv
Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 19

A. Find the Right Set of Keywords

The biggest part of ASO is finding the right set of keywords

for your mobile app. After all, the aim should be to get viewed
on every keyword that visitors use to get to the category
your app belongs to.

The starting of it all would be finding the right set of keywords

that your mobile app can use to get its ranking up in the
store.

What you have to do here is make use of keyword finding

tools like OneLook Reverse Dictionary, Ubersuggest or
Keyword Suggestions and put in the name of the category
your app belongs to and get a list of at least 50+ keywords.

Once you have made a list of the possible keywords, the

next thing to do is demarcate the list according to the
popularity of the terms and the ranking difficulty. Doing this,
should leave you with a set of around 25 short and long
form keywords to use for your app promotion.

B. Place the Keywords in the Right Places

Once you have a good set of keywords with you, the next
step is to start placing the keywords in the right places of
the application page in the Play Store and App Store.

Here are the locations that you should focus on:

- App Title

Apple gives you the freedom of 30 characters title while in

Play Store, you can use 50 characters for your app title. Aim
at posting the keyword in the title for maximum visibility and
higher ranking opportunity.

- App Description

In case of both Play Store and App Store, you get the option
to enter a short and long form description of what your app

2021-22
©2019 Appinventiv
Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 20

does. The idea is to have your most promising keyword in

both short and long form keywords to make it easy for both
visitors and stores to identify what your mobile app is about.

- App Store Keyword Section

Apple gives you the option to put in keywords in the App

Store keyword section. The idea is to put in all your top
performing keywords in the section, separated by a comma.
There are a few things to remember here as well - Don’t put
in the app name or the name of the app category in the list
of keywords, do not repeat the keywords more than once,
and avoid space, preposition, and spaces.

- In-App Purchases

Both Google and Apple gives you the option to index the
name of In-App Purchase in the App Store search. Every IAP
has own promotional image, display name, and description.
The in-app purchases also appear in the app search results
and get featured in the Games,Today, and Apps section in
the stores.
You can showcase over 20 IAPs in the product page, so
ensure that you use the section very wisely.

While both the pointers mentioned above are ones that you
can get a hang of before the app is posted on the Play Store
and App Store, there is something, very crucial, that you will
have to take care right before the app launches in the stores
and then continue till the time your app is live in stores.

C. Work on App Aesthetics

- App Icon

Your app icon is the first thing people notice. So, it is very
important that the icon design is eye-catchy. You can take
the inspiration of your app idea from the top apps in the
category, while ensuring that the design is not imitated. Your
app icon element should should tell what the app is about,
aesthetically.

2021-22
©2019 Appinventiv
Appinventiv
Successful App Entrepreneur 21

- Screenshots

It is a known fact in the App Store industry that app

screenshots increase the conversion rate by over 25%.
To ensure that the screenshots are impactful, make sure that
the first two screenshots itself shows the best of your mobile
app. Your optimized screenshots should carry a design that
users would love to invest their time in while giving them
a rough walkthrough of how your mobile app would move
from one screen to another.

- Preview Video

The preview video of your mobile app should be used to

show the best features of your mobile app. Lasting for over
10 to 12 seconds, the app video should should have a clear
call to action along with working equally impactfully with
the sound off.

- App Localization

If your app audience goes beyond the English speaking

nationals, ensure that your app is localized for them. When
we talk about localization, there are quite a few elements
that you will have to translate according to the nation which
gives you maximum traffic - App’s Stores Page - App Title,
Description, and Video Language or Subtitle. Along with
this, you will also have to work towards translating every
individual page in your mobile app to increase its acceptance
rate in the stores.

- App Size

For better chances of success in the store and users’ devices,

it is very important that your app belongs to a certain app
size - the smaller the better. You should aim at offering just
those amount of features that would fit in perfectly within
a small sized app that doesn’t rob people off of the limited
space that they have in their device.

Get Backup for Your

Business Idea
There are a number of big brands that started off in the
competitive app world as an MVP. With names like Facebook,
Airbnb, Dropbox, Snapchat, Spotify, etc being in the list
of MVP evangelists, the interest that the business world
compromising of both - the brand and the venture capitalists
is very high.

Yes, you read it right. Venture capitalists are equally

interested in your MVP as your brand itself.

If your MVP has been designed, developed, and validated

in a way that a huge mass of audience would be interested
in the app idea and is shown to benefit from it, the chances
of you getting funded on your MVP increases by manifold.

Where should you find Investors for Your MVP?

Expand Your Features

and Business
In an ideal world scenario, chances are that you would
have gotten funding by now to put your app business on a
kickstart mode.

Even if that is not the case, the positive response that you
have gotten on your MVP has now prepared you to enter
the second and final stage of app development. The phase
where you now invest in app development to publish in the
app store of your choice.

This is the stage where the team of developers whom you

have partnered with will add on elements based on the user
and client’s review and then test them to perfection to see
that the app is working perfectly well across devices and the
different OS versions.
