A Toolkit for the Teaching of Vocabulary Development in Grade 10

COMPETENCIES Vocabulary Focus: Learning Activity Learning Materials


Form, Meaning, Use

FIRST QUARTER Word Meaning  The Teacher will present Youtube Video, Power Point
two definitions of the word: Presentation, Google Classroom,
EN10V-Ia13.9:
“Tradition” using google Break-out Rooms
Differentiate formal from
classroom. (One is from
informal definitions of
Wikipedia and the other one
words
is from a Facebook
comment). After presenting
it to the class, the teacher
will give 2 to 3 minutes to
observe the definitions of
the word presented. After
the time allotted, the
teacher will ask 4 students
to give their insights of what
they observe about the two
definitions.
 Then the teacher will now
explain the differences of
the two definitions of the
word using power point
presentation. After that, the
teacher will give another
activity that will practice the
vocabulary of the students
about differentiating formal
to informal definition of
words.
 Students will be group into
4 and they will be given 10
minutes to watch the video
on Youtube about “Learn
English” and after watching,
The Teacher will be going
to create break-out rooms
and leaders by group will
facilitate their members and
discuss the important
factors in the video. After
that, the Teacher will be
going to stop the break-out
rooms and then every
group will pick one
representative to present to
everyone the lesson they
have learned in the video
they watched.

SECOND QUARTER Word Form  The Teacher will read a Google Classroom, Power Point
piece of technical writing Presentation

term. Students will write
their answer on the
comment box of google
meeting.
 Then the teacher will ask
students how they can tell
that it’s a sentence

term. After asking, the

 To practice the learning of
the students about the
lesson, the teacher gives
another activity that will
measure the knowledge of
students about the topic.
 The teacher will post an
activity in the comment
section and students will be
given 10 minutes to write
down their answers.
 Students will come up with
operational definition for
emotions, behaviors and
state of being. For each of
the following statements,
they will provide an
operational definition for the
underlined words.

THIRD QUARTER Word Use Google Classroom, Pictures,


 The Teacher will let

words reading students will be
given 5 minutes to give their
views about the article they
have read.

 Then the teacher will start


to discuss that the article
they read is an example of
“expanded definition of
words” and start to explain
more further the topic. After
the discussion, the teacher
gives a challenge to the
student to test their
understanding about the
new lesson.
 The challenge is about
expanding the definition of
words in a short paragraph.
The teacher will write in the
comment box, “Challenge
#1: Education Amidst
Pandemic” and the students
will be given 10 minutes to
answer in any clean paper
and after that, the teacher
will instruct students to take
a picture and send their
outputs directly to the
teacher. The teacher now
will try to look for their
answers and will pick 2-3
students that got the high
score in the challenge
activity.
 The teacher gives another
set of activity and students
will be going to analyze the
picture flashed in the
screen. Students will
choose three ways of
expanding the definitions of
words to describe or define
the picture presented.

 The teacher will activate the


FOURTH QUARTER Word Form prior knowledge of the Google Classroom, Power Point
students by asking the Presentation, Breakout Rooms
EN10V-IVa-30: Get
students what cultural
familiar with technical
heritage they want to

preserve. Students will
identify the importance, its
history and influence on the
culture. The teacher will
pick 2-3 students to share
their idea about the activity
and answer the guide
questions prepared by the
teacher.
 Then the teacher will give
warm up activity to the
students to measure the
prior knowledge they have.
In the screen, the teacher
presented list of terms that
best important if they will
have the opportunity to
conduct research. Students
will list their answers in the
meeting chat box. After the
activity, the teacher will
discuss the technical terms
used in research.
 After the discussion, the
teacher prepares an activity
that will measure the
knowledge of the students
about the topic. In the
screen, using power point
presentation, the students
will read the following
statements very well. After
reading, they will distinguish
the terms used in research
that correspond the
statements. Students will
raise their hand if they want
to answer so that the
teacher will recognize the
person who is talking.
 After the individual activity,
the students will be group
by 5 and using the term
used in research and
5WHs, they will formulate a
sample question and a
sample title of the study that
will be helpful in their future
research. Students will be
divided by breakout rooms
and they will be given 20
minutes to formulate and
after that, the teacher will
give time to each group to
share their ideas to the
class.
